I spun around, my feet almost slipping on the stone.
"Will!" I yelled. "Nico!"
My voice didn't echo or carry. It just seemed to be stuck around me. My mind was trying to figure out what was going on while my body was panicking.
Breathe Lizzie. Breathe.
I'm sorry Erik, I thought.
I felt like I couldn't. I couldn't focus on anything but the panic, the darkness all around me.
Figure out where you are. Go from there. Jordan's voice was like a balm, something to distract me from the darkness.
I walked down a few steps, raised my bow to get a better look around me. I couldn't see the walls which didn't make sense since the tunnel was so narrow I could touch both sides with my arms extended.
I reached my arm out into the darkness.
No stone.
No anything.
I took a few steps to find the wall. Nothing.
There was just nothing.
I lowered my bow to the ground. The stairs had leveled out. I didn't remember reaching the bottom.
I took a step forward.
Something knocked me back.
I landed on my back, my bow knocked away. I searched for the glow of the bronze but it seemed to have disappeared in the darkness.
I felt something slam into my body. I wasn't sure what it was.
I clawed and kicked at the air but there was nothing. The thing forced itself down on my chest, my body. I gasped for air.
I felt my eyes go wide as something was forced down my throat. I choked on it. It was smoky and heavy and made me woozy. It forced its way into my lungs.
All I could do was gasp from the pressure and choke on air.
I didn't pass out but I felt like I could.
I felt the ground shake beneath me, felt it shift. It felt distant, like it was happening far away.
Nico, I thought. This is a dream.
I reached out and focused on the smoke in front of me. I wrapped my hands around the smoke and twisted.
Something in the distance shrieked in pain.
I groaned as I came to. My head hurt, my throat was sore and my lungs burned. I felt stone beneath me. It was wide enough not to be the steps in the Door of Orpheus.
I gripped my bow in my hand, the curves and cuts familiar like my own skin.
"Yes ALWAYS!" A voice boomed. It was unfamiliar with a slimy tilt to it. "Did you believe you could fool me? You truly don't know me Nico di Angelo."
My eyes hurt as I opened them, like they had been glued shut. My body begged me to just lay down and rest. I ignored it.
Nico was being held in the air by a... something. It was big, black with multiple tentacles and appendages all around its body. It looked like it was made of shadows. At the same time I could see a vaguely humanoid figure with a spiked helmet on what had to be the creature's head.
"What do you want from me?" Nico demanded.
Will was twelve feet away from me, slowly stirring. He was to the creature's side, I was facing its back.
