"ALYSSA!" I screamed. "Alyssa Young!"
I didn't need to. She knew I was here. I knew she was around somewhere. That wave after wave of terror confirmed it.
I'm not sure what I was expecting. I was expecting for her to kill me. For her to yell at me. I would have taken it. I would have taken everything because I had deserved it all.
When she appeared in front of me, I wasn't prepared.
She was a ghost. Her entire body was white and see through. Despite this, she was dressed in offical Roman armour. Only her helmet was missing. And across her throat was a long slash mark that stretched from the left side of her jaw to her clavicle. The blood was an outline, but an outline that made me want to throw up. Her hair fell around her shoulders, her rust coloured eyes glared at me with no colour in them at all.
"Well," she said. "Here you are. I half expected you to run."
I felt myself gape at the sight. I didn't think she would be able to speak. My hands shook where I held the knife. I understood in that moment that I wasn't gonna be able to fight her. I couldn't. I wasn't enough. I wouldn't be strong enough.
"Alyssa..." I breathed. I felt a thousand scattered thoughts running through my mind. I was only able to grasp onto one. "What happened to you? Why didn't you go to the Underworld."
She laughed. I felt the lump in my throat grow, my heartbeat skyrocket. "You think I could?" she hissed. "Hades was sending everyone who fought for Lord Kronos to Punishment. Why do you care anyway? YOU'RE THE ONE WHO KILLED ME!"
I felt the tears prick my eyes. "I know," I breathed. "I could never forget."
She scoffed and floated closer. "Poor little demigod. So tortured." Her face hardened as she stopped a few feet away, glaring at me. "Pathetic. I was strong. I still am." She clenched her fist and I felt my pulse speed up. I gasped and was forced to a knee. Terrorem shook in my grip. "There's a reason Mother Night brought me here. She saw my strength. Now I can finally do the one thing that I've been wishing to do for years." She narrowed her eyes at me. "I can finally kill the cowardly little demigod who never even cared that she murdered me."
I closed my eyes and felt the tears roll down my face. "Alyssa," I breathed out. "I cared. I can never forget because I saw you in those last moments. I saw how scared you were."
Her powers focused on me and I felt more tears prick my eyes. "You don't get to say you cared about me!" she yelled. "No one cared about me!"
"You-You're wrong," I said. "Your mother cared about you. She loved you with everything she had. She still does. She took you on so many hikes because she knew you loved nature. She chaged your school every year because she knew you had a hard time at each one-"
"SHUT UP!" she demanded. Her voice made something move in the mansion behind her. The dirt path beneath my feet shook as well. I could barely make out Nico and Will's voices calling for me. I spared a glance over my shoulder. They were begging, confused and terrified. I shook my head. This was my fight.
I turned back and tried to swallow my fear. "Your father-"
"My father couldn't give a shit about me!" She boomed.
"Your father loved you," I said. I lifted the golden blade in my hand so she would be able to see it. "He gave you your knife."
"That blade was gifted to me by Lord Kronos himself," she stated.
I shook my head. "No. Your father, Metus, gave you Terrorem so you would be able to defend yourself in a camp full of monsters. He loved you Alyssa."
