They were running.

They were running so fast they were all panting.

It was a bit embarrassing for him. He was a grandson of Hermes. He was supposed to be fast, like his aunts and uncles. And he was fast, just faster with his mouth than his feet like his mother liked to remind him. But so was she.

"We're almost there!" Adrian called. Her dark hair ran behind her, freckles sprawled on her face like stars. He shook his head.

Not the time, he reminded himself.

"Where?" Dakota asked. Their dark blue hair was short in an undercut that showed off their hazel eyes. The giant sword across their back seemed like it would slow them down but they were at the front of the group.

"It's a safe house," Adrian replied. "We'll be fine there. It's warded from monsters."

The yelling behind him only made him move faster. The Cyclops wasn't something they had expected or prepared for. Then, of course, they ran into the Cyclops's friends: the giants.

"Are-you-sure?" He wheezed.

"My cousin told me about this place," Adrian confirmed. "It's just around the corner."

Of course she remembered. Hailey hadn't been to Camp Half-Blood in years but Adrian had a photographic memory. It came with being a daughter of Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory.

They turned the corner. They were on a residential street with a few brownstone houses. Three condos were connected at the other end of the street. There was a coffee shop with a giant donut sign on the other side from the condo.

The Cyclops roaring brought him from his scanning.

"Where?" Dakota demanded.

"There!" Adrian said, pointing to the condo. They ran across the empty street and sprinted toward the house. "The middle door!"

Dakota was the first up the stairs. Adrian was right after. A dog barked from the one window. But at the same time he would rather take a chance on a dog than a Cyclops that would definitely kill them.

He was able to spy a plaque beside the door. He was going too fast to read it.

He closed the door quickly. He leaned against it, panting hard.

"You alive Carter?" Dakota asked. They sounded bored or uninterested. But he had known the child of Nemesis for a few years now. That was just their voice.

He sent a thumbs up.

He straightened against the door and looked around. It looked like a magazine living room. With clean couches, glass coffee table, a wide window beside the door they had just come in. Beside him was a large closet with enough space to accommodate all the weapons in Cabin Eleven. At the far end of the room was a spiral staircase that went up into the ceiling. He couldn't see any other way of escaping the room. It was essentially a white square. It was either the door with the monsters or the staircase into a random house.

The dog that was barking earlier had come over and was sniffing Adrian. It was a golden retriever with long hair and a blue collar.

"Where are we?" He asked.

"It's a safe house," Adrian repeated. "It's warded against monsters. We'll be safe to rest here for a bit."

There was the sound of footsteps coming from the staircase. He pushed himself off the door. He saw the shoes first, Sketchers that had a bit of lift in them. Then blue jeans with a black belt. It was followed by a New York shirt with the Statue of Liberty on it. Brown hair ran to her shoulders, shadowing sharp jawline and stony grey eyes. She looked around mid thirties.
