Warning: Spoilers for the Sun and the Star ahead
Umpire Rock was a giant piece of Manhattan schist that's considered bedrock. It did have other minerals in it. But of course, I had no doubt there was something special about it. If we were going to the Underworld, well there had to be some kind supernatural quality.
I arrived early in the morning with a half eaten hot dog from the airport.
I took another bite and looked around. I had on my camoflage beanie from the trogs and pulled it on. It was a little chilly for late August. I couldn't see anything too mystical about the rocks. But of course, the Mist worked in mysterious ways. Tourists and joggers went past, some of them looking around at the scenery, others just looking straight ahead. You could tell who were the native New Yorkers.
I ate the last of my hot dog and leaned against one of the boulders. I wasn't sure when Nico and Will were supposed to get here. It was still pretty early in the day. The sun had risen but it wasn't too high in the sky yet.
There was a growl coming from my left. I looked over and saw a Cyclops, pushing through the crowds. The mortals crouched and ducked out of the way. I took off my backpack and opened it up. I pulled out my bow and a bronze arrow. The Cyclops was dressed in construction equiptment and raised a Stop sign with asphalt torn from the ground.
I nocked the bow and pulled it loose. It flew through the air. It lodged in the Cyclops's eye and it disappeared into golden dust. And because the wind had to be against me, I got covered in the gold dust.
The mortals around me cheered.
I blinked in confusion. Okay what? I thought.
"Thank you," a jogger said.
"How did you shoot that piece of concrete?" a man asked.
Concrete. Okay, Mist. That's how you wanna do it?
"I've had a lot of practice," I admitted, pretending to be flustered.
A few more mortals thanked me before I saw Nico and Will. I slung my backpack over my shoulders but kept my bow in hand. I escaped their grasp and jogged over to them.
"Took you long enough," I said.
"Why are you covered in monster dust?" Will asked.
"Cyclops," I explained. "Mortals thought it was a random piece of concrete for some reason."
"How did things go in St Louis?" Nico asked, heading to the schist.
"Painful," I said. "But I got it cleared up."
"So where do we go next?" Will asked.
Nico pointed at the boulders. "Through there."
Will stared at the rocks. I examined them again. Will looked at me, confused. I shrugged. "Am I missing something?" Will asked. "Nico they're just rocks. What are we supposed to do?"
"Oh, I am not doing anything," Nico stated. "I need one of you to sing."
Will looked around. "Is this a prank? Did you and Mr D come up with this? Are there hidden cameras?"
"Wish it was a prank," I muttered.
"I'm honoured that you think I'm capable of orchestrating a prophecy to pull off such a thing, but no, this isn't a joke. This is the literal Door of Orpheus."
I felt my eyes widen and I examined the rocks again. I felt my jaw drop.
"Oh. Oh, so it's..."
