Nico's Stories

The next part of the quest brought us through some very dangerous territory. It got darker the longer we walked. There were patches of skeletal cacti here and there but mostly it was just long stretches of barren rocky ground. There were a few wandering spirits, their outlines nothing more than just grey mist that made their details fuzzy.

I won't deny by saying that I was nervous, all the darkness and openess made me uneasy. I didn't like how vulnerable we were.

My instincts were right. I stopped short and pulled Will into a ravine. The trogs were there a blink later, Nico following, uncertain. I put a finger to my lips and gestured above the ravine. I pulled out my bow as Nico unsheathed his sword.

We both looked over and caught a glimpse of two drakons shooting fire at each other. The sight made me think of the drakon from the battle of Manhattan. These two weren't as big but their scales would be just as tough, making it hard to kill if needed.

"How much farther?" Will asked. "I thought you said it was close."

"Just over the next ridge," Screech-Bling informed. "You'll be able to hear it soon."

"Hear what?" Nico asked before I could. He had a point though. All I could hear was the whispers of the far off dead that begged for an audience.

"Not much farther," Hiss-Majesty said. "From here the path is steep. Watch your step."

I could only watch in horror as Will fell forward, out of the ravine and down the path towards the pair of drakons.

"Will!" Nico cried.

That got the attention of the drakons. They turned their long necks over to us and hissed.

"Get Will!" Hiss-Majesty ordered. "We shall buy you time!"

I pulled out a quiver and gave my backpack to Nico. "There's bandages in there," I told him. "Go!" I hopped out of the ravine and went after the trogs. I slung the quiver over my back and grabbed a fart arrow. I aimed it at the drakons' clawed feet and fired. It veered off since I was running and went into the one drakon's foot. Well more like bounced off. But the impact triggered the gas canisters and the yellow smoke erupted from the arrowhead.

The drakons gagged and coughed which emitted smoke. The trogs ran around the drakons, yelling taunts to distract them.

"Look at me!" Screech-Bling cried. "I am your worst enemy!"

"I can herd cows!" Hiss-Majesty added.

I followed them down the slope a little and tried a bronze arrow for the one drakon. It turned its head and it bounced harmlessly off its jawline. It raised a giant paw and I ran out of the way as it smashed down where I had just been. I was now between the drakon's legs. I tried slicing at the scales but my bow didn't even make an indent. It stepped back and I followed. Then I was hit by something heavy and hard that sent me far away. I hit the ground twenty feet away, a sharp pain in my bad shoulder.

I groaned and looked up when I heard an ear splitting roar. The one drakon was shooting white hot flames at Screech-Bling. I felt rage fill my chest as tears pricked my eyes. The brave trog...

I pushed myself onto my knees. I gripped my bow and forced myself to stand up. I pulled out one of my net arrows and shot it at the one that had spewed fire at the trog CEO. The arrow attatched itself to the monster's shoulder. It roared and growled, trying to shake the thing off. It stuck on there with the magic I had used from the Hecate Cabin.

I forced my legs to keep going, to rejoin the fight. I tried stabbing at the other drakon's foot, which got me nothing but I pissed off drakon. I will admit that wasn't the smartest move. I didn't care though. I sidestepped the giant paw as Nico took a stab at the monster's shoulder.
