Night's Children

The cacodemons froze over my body. The one with the heavy paws released the pressure on my chest and stepped off, making me cough from the rush of air in my body. The one that was biting my arm released its jaws, the spider backing away. The one with the wolf paws let go of my pant leg. I eyed them carefully, watching as they turned to where the shout came from.

Nico stood fifteen feet away, panting.

"No!" Nyx screamed. "Attack the demigods! Now!"

The demons looked so confused. They were created by Nyx, but they were Nico's memories and Nico's nightmares. After a moment, the demons left me, climbed off Will and went to Nico. They looked up at him, like young children wanting affection from their parent.

I blinked in amazement. My arm was bleeding from the spider bites but I couldn't feel them at the moment.

Will was clutching a bloody hand to his chest. "Nico," he breathed. "You're...That's...Oh Apollo, I can't believe this."

"They obey you," Bob said. He reached down and helped Will to his feet. Small Bob came over, still in his saber tooth tiger form and nudged me up. I held the cat's scruff as I picked up my bow.

"They do," Nico confirmed, examining each of his demons. He rose, staring Nyx in her pupiless eyes. He spoke the words from memory,

"Go forth and find the one who calls out your name,
"Who suffers and despairs for refusing to remain;
"Kept in the house of darkness, blocked by walls of terror,
"They must be knocked down by the golden knife bearer.
"There leave something of equal value behind,
"Or your body and soul no one will ever find."

"I don't care about your silly poety, child!" Nyx hissed. "Kneel before me and admit I am right. I will encase you in the same prison as Iapetus if I must!"

"No you won't," Nico stated. "This is a quest and you didn't account for me fulfilling it my way."

"A quest?" the goddess echoed. "I do not assign quests. This was a trap! One you walked directly into!"

"Yes, and that was my choice," Nico said. "Bob is my friend and I was always going to try and save him!" Will limped over to his side. "Will was always going to come with me."

He looked over at me and nodded. I walked over, holding the spider bite on my arm. Small Bob followed, supporting me. "Elizabeth was always going to protect us, she would always put her own ghosts to rest." I gave him a smile, tears in my eyes. Will smiled at me, a sunny wonderful smile that said I forgive you. That simple smile was so much more than just a smile. To me, it was an olive branch a way of saying I still care about you. You're still my friend. You're not alone. I leaned my side against him a little, giving him a silent thank you

"And we would find the fourth person to be part of our quest," Nico continued, looking at Bob.

Small Bob meowed from my side. "Okay, maybe five," Nico acknowledged.

"Do ghost cats count towards quest members?" Will asked.

"I don't know. I think Small Bob is the first cat to ever be part of one," Nico replied.

"He counts in my books," I said.

"Stop your blathering!" Nyx bellowed. "Children, attack them!"

The cacodemons stayed at Nico's feet. The gods behind her didn't move. I smiled.

"No," the goddess in the leather jacket said, buffing her nails on her jacket.

"I'd rather not," Epiales stated.
