Two weeks later...

I tried to snap back to reality but it was hard. The imprints over my neck and arms throbbed. My eyes remained wide open. I was here but not truly here. People walked past me without a thought in their minds. I sat over the bench staring ahead into oblivion knowing anytime soon he was going to emerge from the darkness.

A hand fell over my shoulder and I jumped, "Are you okay?" Lucy asked, sitting beside me on the bench.

A shiver crawled down my spine as my eyes darted back and forth, taking in the surroundings. What was wrong with me? It wasn't the first time I was slipping into a trance. Ever since the calls had stopped, Gideon had been trying to get into my head so he could harm me.

He already had.

One morning I woke up to bruising around my throat and arms.

"Yes, I'm fine. Did you get everything you were looking for?" I asked, turning my knees to her.

"Yes, I did."

"Good." I grabbed my bag and we both stood up before heading to my car that was parked on the side of the street.

The loud sound of the car engine roaring awakened me. I rubbed my eyes before placing my hands over the wheel. Cain had warned me about Gideon using the bond to get to me and he was doing exactly that. Either way, I still didn't want to hear from him—either of them.

Lucy sat on the passenger seat after dropping the bags in the back of the car. She needed a few things from the store and I had taken her.

I slipped out of the parking and focused on the roads rather than trance I had just been in. The longer I had control, the harder it was going to be for Gideon to get inside my head and fuck with me.

"You look pale," Lucy said, watching me drive back to the estate. "Is something wrong?"

"No, I'm fine." I whispered, taking the turn to the signal.

The drive back to the estate was silent. I drove steadily and reached soon enough at the driveway. Lucy stepped out and I killed the engine before leaving. Knox had been occupied by the council over the week, they were imposing new restrictions over the borders and discussing other matters with him as he was the only Alpha now in control of the pack.

"Have you been seeing Gideon?" Lucy questioned behind me. "In your visions?" She continued after a long moment of silence.

The hair over my arms rose and I turned, "How do you know?"

"You told me about the mate bond you shared with him. It makes you vulnerable to him, doesn't it?"

I nodded, "It does."

She placed a hand over my shoulder, giving me a bit of comfort, "I hope its not because of me."

It wasn't.

There was something else Gideon wanted to tell me and it had to do nothing with Lucy. He presented himself different in the visions. It seemed like he was after me and he wanted to kill me.

He was envious—he had to be. He knew I could turn just like him and if I ever did, I'd take away the power and the spotlight from him. He wouldn't be the only creature with the darkness in their blood.

It had to be this. It was the only reason I could think of. Maybe he wanted to warn me to control my dark side after Cain told him what happened at my hometown.

Two days ago, I had a vision where he had his hands around my throat as he tried to kill me. He didn't say me anything or gave me a warning. I woke up suffocated and bruised. Every now and then I feared him slipping into my head. There were moments where someone needed to tap my shoulder or call my name loud enough to get me out of the vision.

Lucy went back to her room and I went upstairs to clear my mind. We had been getting along well, a lot better than I thought. We shared a few things together and it bought us closer.

Finally, I wasn't alone here.

I stopped all contact with my parents and anyone I knew in my hometown except for Natalie who had left. She ran away from home after I had told her the truth. She was now on another part of the world, away from all the lies and schemes my family were doing for years and years.

On the other hand, all seemed right with Knox. He had let Lucy into his pack, changing her status from a rogue to a pack member. We had planned the next weekend away from everyone and everything.

I couldn't wait.

"Candice," I heard someone calling out my name.

My stomach curled and I raised my head. Ahead, there was a large mirror near the bed where I stared at myself. The wall behind me was empty and clear but it soon morphed and changed colors, turning dark.

No. Not again. My heart thudded. I was alone now, not even in public.

"Candice," His voice itched in my ears as I tried to shut him off. My head throbbed in pain. "Listen to me."

"No," I shook my head, closing my eyes before his face appeared in front of me.

"You need to get out of here. The sooner the better. It's not safe for you here just like it wasn't safe for you with your family. You've to leave Thornwood, it's the only way you'll stay in control of yourself." Gideon said. I sensed him behind me, inches away from my neck but even then I didn't dare to open my eyes.

"No. Leave me alone!" I exclaimed while closing my fists and erasing the memory of him from my mind. When my eyes opened, it was clear and his voice was gone, "I'm in control."
