Chapter 48
I sat on the edge of my bed, my fingers curled around the wood while my head was lowered and my eyes were on the ground. I breathed heavily through my nose while something inside me ached.
A hand came over my shoulder and I jumped. Looking behind, I found Cain, all dressed. "Are you okay?" He asked, furrowing his brows.
I cleared my throat and nodded, "Yes."
"You don't seem so."
"I just—" The sharp pain in my belly spread. "I don't know." I stood up, walking back and forth, hoping the pain would go away itself but it didn't.
It remained. A minute passed. Cain gazed at me with worry lingering on his face. I rushed into the washroom and planted my hands on either side of the counter before blood spilled out of my mouth.
It wasn't just a little.
It was everything I had drunk today. All of it. It continued to stream out. Pure red blood.
The pain stopped when I stopped vomiting. Raising my head, I looked into my reflection and found my eyes bloodshot red and blood covering my mouth.
Cain hurried to my side, a bit concerned but more shocked at what he had seen.
I let the tap water run down and take away the blood that had gathered on the sink before I used some of the water to wipe my mouth clean.
"What was that?" Knox stepped in midway.
"Nothing," I didn't meet their gazes. "I don't think the blood I had drunk from your werewolves settled inside me." It was the only explanation I could find and it was absurd.
"Is that so?" Knox wrapped his hand around my arm. "This happened before once, Candice." He reminded me.
I shook my head, "Those were expired blood bags."
"Exactly!" He sounded more worried.
I stepped out of the washroom, unable to bear the smell of blood that had left me. My body was weak, trembling from the cold and my head was heavy. Everything in front of me, my vision, was red and blurry.
"Take my blood," Knox offered, standing near to me and offering his wrist.
I smelled it and then shook my head, "I can't."
"Why not?"
"I just can't. I don't know," I moved his hand away, denying his blood. "I don't feel like to."
"But you need to."
A chill ran down my spine. What was happening to me? Was this the outcome of taking blood from all those innocent people? Maybe I was getting my punishment after all. But it was fresh blood, I should've kept it down as it wasn't from some expired blood bag.
"Have some, Candice," Cain spoke, behind it. "It's better for you."
And it had to be.
I turned to Knox who offered willingly. Lowering my mouth to his wrist, I sank my teeth into his flesh till blood spurred into my mouth. It tasted warm and delicious and I swallowed as much as it was possible before drawing my mouth away.
My breaths raced, becoming quick and fast. I remained seated while they both stood near to me, watching me as I tried to keep the blood down.
The pain returned to my stomach and it became unbearable. My brows furrowed and I planted my hand over my belly.
"Fuck," I groaned, clenching it hard.
"What's wrong?"
"I can't keep it down," I shook my head as the blood began returning to my throat. It was hot, and painful, burning me from within. "I need a bucket. Quick." I glanced up at them.
Cain reached for the small trash can near to the side table and bought it to me. I grabbed onto it and lowered my head before puking the blood out. My vision only remained normal for a moment before everything turned into a blur once more.
"What's wrong?" Knox planted his hand over my back, rubbing it gently as he asked Cain.
"Don't know," He whispered, setting the bucket on the side. "Maybe it is something else. Maybe there's something in the blood around here. Yours, those werewolves she ate—"
I glared at him with surprise, "I didn't eat them!"
"Shh," he turned to Knox, ignoring what I said. "And the blood bags as well. Maybe that imposter wasn't just fucking around with the blood bags. She probably did something here that only affected vampires—you." There was something more in his words.
"Why?" I cocked a brow as the pain in my belly subsided but my head felt lighter, almost on the verge of slipping unconscious. It was common.
I couldn't stay awake for long without blood in my system and if just a certain time passed, I would turn into something else.
"Fuck," I slapped my hand over my mouth. "She wants me to become like Gideon—it must be. I can't keep any blood down which means I won't have any and to feed my hunger I would snap—"
"No, no!" Knox growled, shaking his head. "We aren't going there. Not now."
"I can't keep anyone's blood down, Knox." I reminded him. If it stayed like this, it would be only a matter of days before my hunger would control me and then something else, something dangerous.
He stood up and stepped away from me while reaching for his phone in his pocket.
"What are you going to do?" I asked.
"I'm going to get you wolves, not from my pack and not from this town. You'll feed on them and you should be able to keep their blood down." He explained before dialing someone's number.
I gave it a thought and it could work. Just a while ago, I was doing completely fine and I drank from blood bags. What changed? I could easily drink from other werewolves and keep their blood down—I had done it a hundred times, even after Lucy had gone.
I was able to keep Knox's blood down before.
This wasn't Lucy's doing. She wasn't here anymore.
This was someone else's doing.
What do you think? Maybe she's pregnant 🧐🧐
