Chapter 44

With my jaw clenched, I headed toward Cain and the woman he had been talking to. She was a little older than me, the fine lines in her forehead when she laughed gave that away, but her body was even better than mine. She was dressed well as if she came from one of the higher wolf families in the town.

But what was Cain doing talking to her?

When I reached closer, I heard a bit of their conversation.

"We were gone from the town for so long. It was hard to return after all the chaos that was happening around the world—with us. I wanted to come here long ago, to see you and Knox, both, but I only returned a few weeks away with my family." she said, her voice warm and soft. There was no hesitation in her when she spoke to him which only meant Cain knew her.

And so did Knox.

Was she one of their old flames?

I recalled the time when I first came here. There was a female they both shared in bed and just after my arrival, she was gone. The twins had removed her from the house and began sharing me instead.

I held my breath back and placed the glass of wine over the counter before nearing Cain. As soon as he saw me, his shoulders stiffened and he stood up straight from his curved posture.

"I thought you were going to take some more time getting your shoes on," he whispered, racing his hand down my back. I knew what he meant. He knew well I wasn't going to come down here without force, but I did.

And it was the right thing.

I should've been here long before people began to arrive.

I smiled at him, "Of course I was going to come. I'm not going to miss a party like this," I turned to the woman standing in front of us, finally recognizing her unwelcoming presence, "Who's she?" I asked.

"She's Katherine," Cain responded, a bit of hesitation in his voice. "She used to be around here before." Just as I thought.

"As what?" I cocked a brow, awaiting his reply.

His eyes raced away from mine, "An advisor."

"Mhm," I looked away from him and back at the woman. Reaching forward, I extended a hand toward her and said, "Nice to meet you Katherine."

"You too—"

"Oh, I forgot to introduce myself. Cain?" I called his name, eyebrow arched. "Why don't you introduce me to her. There aren't many people who know of me, aren't they?" I teased him a little more. He grew slightly nervous for a moment but it soon washed away.

"No, they aren't." His hand clenched around mine. "This is Candice—"

Before he continued, I stepped forward and spoke to Katherine my self, "I'm his mate and a vampire," A hot breath left my throat as vision darkened. My gaze focused into her eyes, searching for her control before I took it and continued, "And perhaps you should be looking elsewhere. Don't let me find you here again and forget this conversation entirely." The threats came out of me itself, I had no hold over it.

Her hands dropped down and she turned away from the bar, leaving us without saying another word.

"I like when you're jealous," Cain chuckled behind my ear before racing his hands down my hips and feeling himself of me. "It looks sexy on you."

"Did you fuck her?" I turned to him and asked.

"Does it matter?" He raised a brow and when I didn't respond, a frown returned to his face. "She came to me, she was talking about her family and then the topic changed. It was years ago, Candice. We only had her for a couple of months and it was just that."
