Chapter 42
Something was up.
The eclipse had long passed. It was the next week yet Cain hadn't be thrown out by Knox yet. I kept wondering why—what was the reason? He was only here because of me, so he could help us not be fools and take action if Lucy were ever to show up. She hadn't. The last time anyone had seen her was at the eclipse. Since then, there were no sightings of any injured woman leaving Thornwood or entering.
I stuck my ear against the thick wall inside the basement and tried to hear whatever was going inside.
The council was here, fourth time in the past week and they were discussing something. Cain was in there as well. I was kept out as well, far away from the werewolves and their pack.
I remained curious as to what was going on.
Cain had been with Knox more than I had been with him. They were doing something together and were often out of the estate during the mornings. Even when they returned at evenings, they were with several men of the pack.
No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't find out.
My senses weren't working up to par even when I was drinking great amounts of blood, from both of them and from blood bags.
The door became unlocked and knob shuffled before the door open and I fell straight head into Cain's arm.
Standing up straight, I quickly backed up and pushed my shoulders behind while meeting with their gazes. Before I opened my mouth to say something, Knox planted his finger on my lips while Cain grabbed my arm and pulled me to the side.
"Don't say anything." Knox whispered.
We moved farther away from the door and I was pushed back, behind the twins. With their heights, I barely caught a glimpse of what was going on inside the meeting room. Just moments later, I began hearing footsteps. Standing on my tip toes, I watched as several men from the council began walking out of the meeting room and heading upstairs to leave.
I sighed heavily as they all left. The only men remaining in the basement were Cain, Knox and their Uncle—Ethan, who I still didn't like. His presence gave me an ick I couldn't scratch away.
"Congratulations," Ethan said, shaking hands with the twins. "The pack is yours now—to rule or to destroy." He continued, forcing me furrow my brows.
What? When was the pack not theirs?
"Couldn't have done it without you." Knox said, a wide grin over his face. He was happy, happier than I had ever seen him. The gleam on his face was surprising considering the council men seemed all pissed when leaving the room.
What was going on?
I needed to know. Right now.
"We'll hold a celebration at evening. Preparations are already at place. We expect to see you there, Uncle." Cain said, shaking his hand.
"Of course. I wouldn't miss it."
A celebration for what?
My face went blank. They waited for Ethan to leave before they turned toward me. I couldn't be punished for eavesdropping—never again. I had the right to know what was happening.
"The council is being thrown-out," Knox began, a gleaming smile over his face. His eyes shone as well.
"But why?" My eyes widened in horror. "This was the last pack remaining with a hierarchy and a council. Why would you do that? Wouldn't it weaken you in the werewolf world?" I questioned while considering all the wrong reasons to why this was a horrible idea.
"No, it would strengthen us. The hierarchy is still at place. I'm still the Alpha of this pack, of Thornwood. Abolishing the council would mean I cannot be controlled by a group of aged men, I cannot be thrown-out by them and neither would I ever have to listen to any of their commands ever after," Knox continued, explaining to me. His hands went around my hips. "This is what we've wanted for long. The council had controlled this pack ever since it was made. Now, it's time for us to control it."
My eyes shot to Cain. He was even more happier.
No fucking way.
"You gave him his title back?" My jaw hung.
"Candice—"
"No. After everything, you gave him title back? I can't believe you, Knox!" My teeth gritted. I wasn't sure why I was angry, but I was.
Not once Knox clued me into his work, or anything about his pack matters. Not once. And just as Cain flew here, acting as a superhero, he forgave him for everything he did and let him reclaim his title. In minutes. I was enraged. He promised he'd never forgive Cain for his betrayal, but he already had.
God.
"Candice," Knox called out my name as I scurried upstairs and into the bedroom.
"Leave me alone." I said, my head on fire before I slammed the door shut and locked it up.
Knox knocked on the door a couple of times, but I didn't open it. Not once. I had listened to him rant about his hatred for Cain, which made a part of me hate him as well and suddenly, all was forgiven, without any effort.
Cain was right when he told me Knox would forgive him in moments. They shared blood. They were brothers—twins.
Hours passed by. I kept my temper in check and cooled down. The twins were rejoicing over getting complete control of their pack. I wasn't angry at Cain, not at all, but when he knocked on the door I still didn't open it. I needed a moment, a very long moment.
"You're going to miss all the fun, Candice." He said behind the door.
My lips straight and I folded my hands across my chest while remaining seated on the bed. What fun? They were intending on a celebration at evening. A celebration for removing the council and a celebration for Cain's return.
"I don't care. Leave me alone!" I exclaimed, not too loud.
"There's nothing to be angry about, Candice. It had to happen. If you were ever pissed at your sister, you'd forgive her no matter what she did. It wasn't easy to get Knox's forgiveness, but I knew he would eventually."
I stood up and rushed toward the door before opening it. Cain stood on the doorway with his arm raised and elbow against the wall. I gave him a quick look and said, "He made me feel guilty even thinking about you and suddenly, everything's okay?"
"Yes."
"Fuck off." I nearly slammed the door before placed his arm and forced himself inside the room.
"Quit being angry. Take a shower, wear a dress and come down by eight. Our reconciliation is only going to benefit you." He continued, a grin spread over his face.
