Shuck, shuck, shuck.

The doors hadn't closed, and they were herding everyone into the homestead, even after your protests. You didn't think it was the best idea to have everyone sitting in one spot, just waiting for the grievers to come. You gave in though, and walked up the homestead steps, but once you were actually there, on the second story of the homestead, you didn't know what to do. You just stand there, unsure if you should be hiding, trying to run, or just freaking out. Newt had just gotten up, and immediately saw your distrace. He walked over to you, a worried expression on his face

"Hey, (Y/N), are you doing okay?"

"Yeah, yeah Newt I'm fine. You really don't have to worry about me."

Newt took your hand

"Yes I do. I have to worry about you every second of every day. Now, what's wrong?"

You sigh

"Just scared I guess."

"Well, I'll protect you."

You shrug. You loved Newt, but what could he do against a griever? Newt ran off, and came back a few seconds later with one of the planks the builders were using to board up the homestead.

"I'll stay up all night waiting, and if anything gets close to you, I'll smack it with this!"

You knew that plank really wouldn't do anything to a griever, but you faked happiness anyway.

"Wow, Newt. That's really. . . something. You really don't have to do that for me though."

Newt looked at you sternly

"I can, and I will. You mean the world to me (Y/N)."

You know he's not going to not going to drop this, so you surrender and sit down. Newt sits directly in front of you

"Newt. No."

"Yes."

You're about to say something, but you're cut off by a loud metallic screech, and you instantly freeze. Newt reaches out and grabs your hand, and squeezes it. He's trying to tell you everything will be alright. Then the silence started. It went on for a long time, and you think that you fell asleep. You jolt awake with Newt tapping your shoulder, almost frantically. You realize that you had fallen asleep, and had leaned forward and used his head as a pillow. Embarrassed, you sit up fully, and look around. Nothing had changed. You whisper into Newt's ear

"What?"

Newt put a finger to his lips

"Listen. . ."

That's when you heard it. A muffled thumping sound coming from the wall opposite of you. It gives you a sick feeling in your stomach

"Newt. . . what is it?"

Newt gritted his teeth

"They're climbing the homestead."

You knew this had happened last night, but you had been in the slammer at the time for going into the maze. How would you react to getting told the end was coming? Your's was bolting into the maze. Suddenly, the thumping stopped. You let out a breath that you were unaware that you were holding. Out of nowhere, a huge chunk of the opposite wall exploded, raining shards of wood all over. A griever slammed through, and onto the floor of the homestead, looking around at us. Newt had jumped to his feet, and put his arms out as if to shield you. You knew this would only draw attention to Newt, so you grabbed his arm and pulled him down. Newt wrapped his arms around you, making you unable to see what was happening, or move.

You hear the grievers unsteady lurches.

You hear a muffled scream.

You hear a sickening crunch.

You hear silence.

Newt let's go, but you stay curled in a ball, too scared to move.

When you feel sunlight from the new hole in the wall, you know the attack is over. You sit up, and Newt walks over to you. His hair is caught in the sunlight, him still clutching the board, even his wrinkled clothes. Then, you notice something more. He had tears in his eyes. You stand up, and walk over to him, now it was your turn to be worried

"Hey Newt? You okay?"

He rubs his neck

"Huh? Oh, yeah. . ."

He smiles, but it looks fake. His eyes don't smile. Nor does the rest of his face

"Newt, are you sure?"

He snaps at you.

"Yes I'm shucking sure!"

You take a step back, hurt by his sharp words.

"Oh, god, I'm sorry (Y/N). . ."

You nod, but only half heartedly

"Yeah, I know Newt."

In the silence that follows, you glance around at the other gladers. Some are crying, some are stunned, and some are talking in hushed tones. It takes you a few seconds to realize it, but once you do, it consumes you.

"N-Newt?"

He looks at you

"Yes, love?"

"Wh-Where's Alby?"

Newt finnaily lets his fake smile drop.

"He's g-gone. . ."

You wrap your arms around Newt.

"Newt, oh Newt. . ."

Newt pulled away

"I knew one of us would be taken (Y/N). I knew it! It's what happened last night, and Alby sacrificed himself! I d-didn't want you to see it, thats wh-why I covered you. . . that's why I protected you. . ."

You take one of Newt's hands, and lead him to the hole. You sit on the edge, and he sits next to you.

"Then we'll use his sacrifice, Newt. We'll escape today. All of us."

Newt looked at you, before pulling you into a kiss.

"(Y/N), I'm just so glad you were in the slammer that night. If you were taken I don't know what I would do. I love you (Y/N). I love you so much."

"I love you too, Newt. So so much."
