The end of May was nearing, and with that also Bobby's anniversary of death. This meant that I was set to fly out to Boston once again for his memorial mass as well as Joe's announcement to run for Senator. The past few days I had perfected my speech for that and re-written it at least eight times.

This time, I switched planes in Lisbon and took my usual rental car at Boston airport to drive down to the Compound. Things had changed quite a lot since Easter. In Grandpa Joe's house the ground floor had been changed temporarily into Joe's campaign headquarters and lots of people were already bustling around there.
"Mary! Finally!" Joe said when he spotted me amongst all the chaos and came over to hug me.
"This is... wow" I said, still looking around overwhelmed.
"Yeah, it's all a bit much, but it's not long now. Elections are already in October and we're very late, so everything has to work ten times more efficiently." he explained.
"Have you read my speech?" I asked.
"Nope. I'm going to let you surprise me. Raw emotions for the cameras - I hope it will move me to tears!" he said and disappeared again, leaving me there with a smile.

Before dinner, I visited Bobby's grave for some alone time with him. I had brought him an exact replica of what would have been my bridal bouquet.
"Hey Bobby. Here I am, I wish I could come here more often, but I try to go to Rascasse at least once a week too, as you surely know.
Everyone's so excited for Joe, and I am too, I hope he will live up to everyone's, but especially his' expectations...
What else is new? Yes, Carmen and George christened their baby and I'm a godmother, and well... I don't know about Charles. He's certainly there for me, but sometimes I don't know if he's just stuck in old feelings and is actually over me but on the other hand I don't know if I'll ever be ready again, it all still just seems like yesterday to me...
I hope our baby is up there with you, I miss you guys so much down here..." I said and wiped away the tears that were slowly covering my cheeks.

bostonglobe Bobby Kennedy's friends and family have gathered in Cape Cod on the anniversary of his death for a memorial mass. Up front, his fiancé Mary Wright and his brother Joseph "Joe" Kennedy VI, who has been rumoured to run for Senate this year, but no official confirmation has been put out yet.

The mass was beautiful and Bobby's parents had hosted a small gathering at their house at the Compound afterwards. Lots of family and friends had made it and I was very happy to see some of my friends that lived in Boston there.

mary.wright98 Your day today Joejoe 😘 I'm so proud of you.

Today was the day. Cameras and journalists were waiting once again outside the house on the lawn. Flashbacks to mine and Bobby's engagement announcement inevitably went through my head, but I managed to stay cool and held the cards with my notes on it firmly in my hands. Joe had asked me to introduce him and I was very nervous about it. In some way, I wanted to make Bobby proud and knew that I couldn't mess up.

At 10am sharp, Will, the head of Joe's campaign office gave us a nod and the terrace doors flew open and all of us stepped outside. The parents, the siblings, Joe and me.
I went up to the small lectern and took a deep breath before speaking up:
"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.
Today I have the honour of introducing a man who needs no introduction. The legend around his family's last name has been built and their accomplishments are many. But this man is set to write his own name in the history books, very much by himself.
I've enjoyed the good fortune of knowing him for quite a few years now and seeing him grow up from a fresh college graduate to the man he is now. He has a strength to make hard decisions and motivate those around him to achieve the impossible. He is an optimist who chases big dreams and sees potential where others do not. He leads by example and will outwork anyone in any room. He knows how to be a fierce opponent, but also how to be a very loyal friend.
Our generation finds itself at a crossroads. Our leadership has been mired in bureaucracy of its own creation. If we don't adapt politically and economically, our country will be left behind. To address the many challenges we face, we don't need talk, we need action, we need execution, we need someone who is bold and independent and this man's youth brings him an advantage in that.
He is a dreamer, but perhaps more importantly, he is a doer. Ladies and gentlemen, it is my pleasure to introduce to you today a man who I have grown to love and respect, my dear Joseph Kennedy."

Joe nodded at me and had a smile on his face. He walked up to me and kissed both my cheeks, before turning to the press himself and getting ready to announce his candidacy.
I went and stood next to Carolyne who grabbed my hand tightly and whispered a "Thank you". I smiled at her and then we listened to Joe's speech - he had written it himself and he had done a great job at it. I stood there and looked at him: he had the looks, he had the charm and he had the brains, I was sure that he was going to succeed.

That evening, I went to the graveyard once again and told Bobby all about today's events. I spent at least one or two hours there talking to him and when the sun went down, I decided to get back to the Compound. When I said goodbye to everyone the next day before driving to the airport, for some reason, it felt like I was saying goodbye to this place for a long time.
