The first thing I felt was the slight burning sensation igniting from my right leg, and it hurt like a bitch. The strong antiseptic smell assaulted my nose and those merciless florescent lights pierced against my eyelids. I slowly open my eyes, recollecting any memories before this moment right now.
I survived. She saved me.
When I manage to fully open my eyes, I take in my surroundings. I didn't realise I couldn't hear much just a little while ago, but now that I was fully conscious, it feels like I was shoved right next to a exploding bomb.
My mother was hysterical holding me, crying, my father yelling, probably calling our doc Mathew. Ash was on the other side of me, both concern and relief flashing his eyes. Charlotte and Noah was also there sitting on those ugly, uncomfortable hospital chairs, looking tired but ok.
But she was nowhere to be seen.
I woke up to a room without her.
"Mom, where's Alaina?", I manage to choke out, my throat feeling dry.
"Shhh, don't talk. You need to rest baby.", she replies, gently patting my head. She hadn't done much public display of affection in so long, mainly due to my slight aversion to unexpected touch but in this moment I take in her physical comfort.
But I wanted her comfort too. Alaina's.
I look around the room once again, but she wasn't there. I try to ask again but Mathew comes in the moment I try to open my mouth. He looked worn out, which wasn't a change from the normal. It wasn't easy dealing with people like us. Lots of ugly, bloody, scenes. And handling them confidentially.
"Thank goodness you've awaken. Lots of blood loss. Was fatal" Mathew shares. Delivering news professionally wasn't a forte of his. He was fortunate that we despised those who beat around the bush. We don't have time for that shit.
"But I'm alive." I say
"Yes you are. Wound has been patched up nicely. A couple days of monitoring and you should be good as new. It was a good thing that . . . Never mind. Um, I know you're not gonna listen, but it would be best for you to not do anything strenuous for the next 6 weeks.", he explains with hesitation.
"What were you gonna say?", I question, watching as he becomes uncomfortable to my question.
"Pardon?"
"Don't play dumb. What was the good thing?"
"Oh, nothing important. Just ah, good thing you've woken up. That's all", he replies voice static. Rehearsed. Bullshit.
"I am asking answers, not excuses."
"Luke drop it. He's just glad.", my mother sternly tells me off, insistently.
There was something very wrong. They are hiding something from me. And they weren't gonna tell me.
"Fine, but I want need to talk to Ash.", I demand, expecting some rebuttals, but they all obliged and started shuffling out. But as they leave, both my parents looks towards Ash with that parent look telling you to shut it. Fucking parents.
