Silverpaw felt something prod her side. She opened her eyes to see the golden tabby outline of Rosecloud. "Silverpaw its time to start training, everyone already left." said Rosecloud. Silverpaw jumped out of her nest. The den was empty. Even Foxpaw had left. "I'm so sorry Rosecloud!" Silverpaw shouted. "I'm ready to go."
Rosecloud nodded and flicked her tail so Silverpaw would follow her. Silverpaw follow Rosecloud through camp. Gorsepaw, the eldest apprentice, was talking with his mentor, Wrenwhisker. Soon Silverpaw and Rosecloud were out of camp and on the wide open moor. Rosecloud stopped and turned to face Silverpaw.
"OK, its time to see how fast you can run. Run around here two laps." Rosecloud commanded. Silverpaw nodded and began running across wide open space. Her paws barely skimmed the ground as she completed her first lap.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Rosecloud nodding with approval. Then, Silverpaw saw something else. She saw Runningpaw sitting besides his mentor, Smokefur. His black and white fur was fluffed out against the wind.
Oh no, thought Silverpaw. She wondered if Runningpaw, was here to criticise her. Silverpaw finished her second lap and stopped besides her mentor. "You have great pace, and your strides are nice and wide." said Rosecloud. Smokefur meowed in agreement. "I could do better." Runningpaw mumbled. Suddenly his eyes brightened. "Can we have a race Smokefur?" asked Runningpaw.
Smokefur looked up at Rosecloud, as if he were questioning her silently. "I don't see why not." Rosecloud finally answered. Smokefur nodded. "Run from here to the bush and back." he instructed. Silverpaw crouched and waited for Smokefur or Rosecloud to shout for the race to begin. "Go!" yowled Rosecloud.
Silverpaw sprang forward. Out of the corner of her eye she saw Runningpaw a few paces behind her. Silverpaw was soon a few fox-lengths away from the bush. The wind was roaring in her ears. Suddenly she saw a flash of black and white fur, thunder past her. It was Runningpaw!
Runningpaw looked over his shoulder and glared at Silverpaw. "Try and catch up, your slower than a badger" he yelled. Silverpaw felt her fur burn with rage. She was fast and she would be the best warrior the clan had ever seen. Silverpaw shot forward, and was soon beside Runningpaw.
Her heart was pounding so hard it sounded like it was in her ears. Silverpaw and Runningpaw raced past their mentors and skidded to a halt. Silverpaw forced herself to stay on her paws. "Its a tie!" Rosecloud yowled. Silverpaw looked at Runningpaw. His amber eyes were wide. "Not bad,"he said. "For a kittypet." Silverpaw hissed at the tom. What right did he have to say that?Runningpaw froze, and his whiskers twiched will embarrassment. "Sorry... and your really good at running." he mewed quietly. Silverpaw realized that he really meant what he said. "Thanks, and your good at running too." Silverpaw said cautiously.
Rosecloud padded over. "Do you two think you can manage exploring the territory today?" she asked. Silverpaw nodded. "Alright, let's go." said Rosecloud. Silverpaw padded after her mentor, so did Runningpaw.
"Can we go to the gorge first?!" Runningpaw suddenly piped up. Smokefur asked Rosecloud if it was alright. "Its fine." she replied. Silverpaw padded after her mentor. She knew that Runningpaw wanted to go to the gorge was because he had heard the elders boasting about jumping across.
Soon, Silverpaw heard the roaring of the river that ran through the gorge. "Don't get to close." Rosecloud warned. Silverpaw nodded. "Don't worry I won't." Silverpaw replied.
I wouldn't get close even if some cat gave me the entire fresh kill pile, she thought. Silverpaw looked to the side. Runningpaw was staring at the roaring water below. "This is part of our border with River Clan." Smokefur said. Silverpaw looked at the other side of the gorge. There was no sign of River Clan.
"Further downstream, is the border with Thunder Clan." Rosecloud meowed. "How can they stand living underneath all those trees?" Runningpaw asked, as he padded after Smokefur. Rosecloud and Smokefur looked at Runningpaw, eyes filled with amusement. "Well, every Clan has a special enviorment they are best suited to." Smokefur answered. "Thunder Clan is best suited to hunting in undergrowth, and hiding in brambles."
Rosecloud suddenly said, "I think we'll have to finish the tour of the territory later. The sun's already going down."
Rosecloud was right, the sun was sinking. "Let's go back to camp." said Smokefur. They all started padding back to camp. "My paws are killing me." Silverpaw whispered to Runningpaw. Silverpaw felt happy knowing that she had acomplished so much on her first day as an apprentice. Silverpaw knew that she would train hard to be a warrior her Clan would be proud of.
