Silverpaw hit the ground with a thud. Rosecloud was quietly circling her. She and Rosecloud were working on battle skills. It had been a quarter moon since the Gathering. Some of the cats were still nervous about the accusations. Most were infurriated, but Silverpaw wouldn't let that distract her.
"Well, what are you going to do now?" Rosecloud meowed cooly. Silverpaw heaved herself to her paws and waited. She knew a move Rosecloud had taught her, and it just might work in this situation. She waited until Rosecloud was in front of her, and then she rolled under her and kicked her mentors stomach. Rosecloud rolled to the ground.
"How was that?" Silverpaw panted. "That was great." said Rosecloud, as she got to her paws. Rosecloud grunted and licked her shoulder. "I'll be sore for days." she teased. "Your free the rest of the day. I'm going to rest."
Silverpaw and her mentor finally arrived back at camp. All the apprentices were eating together, even Gorsepaw was with them. She ran over to them. "I passed my assessment!" Silverpaw mewed triumphantly. "Congratulations!" Foxpaw shouted. Runningpaw said the same. "Congratulations." Gorsepaw meowed happily.
Stormpaw gulped down the last of his vole and said, "Crowclaw says I'm great at hunting!" He obviously wanted to show off. Sunpaw cut in and just had to tell them how she had fought off a hawk. Silverpaw could just feel herself and the others improving. She wanted to be a warrior so badly. She had to prove herself a loyal Wind Clan cat.
She looked at Gorsepaw. He was the oldest out of the apprentices. He'll be a warrior before us that's for sure, she thought. I just have to train hard. She realized that Gorsepaw was staring at her, his tail twitching with annoyance. "Sorry." Silverpaw mewed.
Hawkwing suddenly padded up to them. "Does anyone want to go on patrol?" His answers were yowls of agreement. "Okay, okay! Silverpaw, Foxpaw, and Runningpaw come with me. Sunpaw,Gorsepaw, and Stormpaw, go with Cloudfur."
They all meowed goodbye. "Bye Silverpaw!" Stormpaw suddenly called out. " Oh, bye Stormpaw." Silverpaw meowed back cheerfully.  Mistpelt and Dustclaw were waiting at the camp entrance. "Ok, let's go." Hawkwing meowed. The patrol padded out of camp. Silverpaw felt the wind ruffle her pelt. Foxpaw bounded over to Hawkwing. He started telling him about his training with Mistpelt. They were going to patrol the border by Thunderpath.
Soon enough, the horrid stench of the Thunderpath appeared. "Smells like a fox that's been dead for a moon." Runningpaw whispered. "You just said what I was thinking." Silverpaw purred. There was an upset meow from Foxpaw. She and Runningpaw turned to look at the ginger tom. He had a play-hurt expression on his face. "Hey you guys do know my name is Foxpaw!" he meowed jokingly. The all let out mrrowws of laughter. Dustclaw turned his head and grumbled, "We're on patrol, be serious." Silverpaw flinched at the sandy-brown tom. She nodded at him and follwed behind the patrol. Foxpaw remained quiet alongside Runningpaw. "He woke up on the wrong side of his nest." Runningpaw meowed quietly.
Hawkwing was staring at the Thunderpath with a look of pure fear. "Don't forget, no one goes near the path." He said nervously. "OK can any of you smell anything?" Mistpelt asked the apprentices. Foxpaw immediately began sniffing the ground and then scented the air. "I smell the Thunderpath, heather, monsters, and our border!" he told his mentor swiftly. She let out a purr of delight. "Good work."
Hawkwing suddenly asked Silverpaw, "Do you smell anything else?" Silverpaw stopped and scented the air carefully. "A Twoleg and his dog... heather," she meowed. She picked up another scent as well. The scent of pine trees. "I smell something else..." She said. Mistpelt looked at her quizically. She sniffed around. "She's right. It smells like pine." Silverpaw watched the three warriors scent the air. "Its Shadow Clan!" Foxpaw yowled. "That smell is just like their cats at the gathering. They live under pine trees, I heard an elder talking about how he climbed one." Silverpaw saw Runningpaw lash his tail in anger. "Well where's the scent lead!?" Silverpaw turned and caught a whiff of the scent again. It was further into WindClans border. The scent was leading straight inside the territory!
