After Moonpaw explained her dream to the astonished medicine cat, there was a long stretch of silence. Moonpaw wondered if Birdsong would know what Duskstar had meant. The medicine cat was mumbling something under her breath. "Do... do you know what this means?" Moonpaw asked.
Birdsong finally looked up, her green eyes shining. "I don't know what this means yet. But, I'm sure of one thing." she meowed. "We mustn't speak of this to anyone. At least for now."
Moonpaw nodded uncertainly. "I won't say anything." she said. "But what did Duskstar mean by, the moon will light the way through the darkest hours?" Moonpaw asked hastily. Birdsong got up and said, "Its possible that... that it's a prophecy." Moonpaw shuddered as Birdsong finished speaking. She felt that she was to young to be part of a prophecy. Birdsong laid her tail on Moonpaw's shoulder. "Don't worry, I'm not sure of anything yet. Just keep doing well in training, and don't worry about this." Birdsong said gently. Moonpaw nodded.
How can I not worry, she thought. Birdsong's meow broke her thoughts. "Let's go, your friends should be back from training by now."
The two cats padded out of the cavern, and slipped back into camp from behind the nursery. Moonpaw saw Foxpaw, Runningpaw, and Sunpaw in front of their den talking. Moonpaw glanced over her shoulder to meow a quiet farewell to Birdsong, but the medicine cat was already walking back to her den. Maybe she's going to talk to Lillyleaf, Moonpaw wondered. "Hey! Moonpaw!" a voice cried out.
Moonpaw turned her head and saw Foxpaw beconing her with his tail. She raced over to the group, hoping they all did well in their assessments and hunting trips. Runningpaw's eyes were shinning. "Smokefur said that I passed. I caught a rabbit half as big as him!" Runningpaw said proudly. Moonpaw saw his eyes shine again. "I passed to! I nearly caught a dozen mice!" Foxpaw declared happily. "Me too! Cloudfur says that I'm turning out to be an excellent hunter!" said Sunpaw.
"Wow! All I did was go on patrol, and got a thorn stuck in my paw." Moonpaw meowed. They all let out mrrrrowws of laughter. Suddenly, Moonpaw heard Brightstar call a clan meeting. She and the others got up and raced towards the Meeting Hollow. Brightstar was just about to begin.
"Dustclaw's  patrol has seen Twolegs and their dogs on the moors." he meowed. Moonpaw shuddered. The elders said that if one of the dogs spotted you, it would chase you until it got tired. Runningpaw laid his tail on her shoulder. His amber eyes were wide, and his tail was fluffed out with fear. Brightstar continued to speak.
"There's no need for panic," he mewed as some of the elders began to shiver. "The dogs only stay here until leaf-fall. That's only an few days away."  A tortise-shell elder stepped forward and said, "The last time the dogs came, they chased our patrols and attacked them." he yelled. A chorus of yowls answered the elder's words. Moonpaw hadn't seen the dogs, but they sounded dangerous enough already.
She saw Brightstar raise his tail for silence. "Your right about that Owlclaw, but we've dealed with the dogs before, and I'm sure that our warriors are able to deal with them now." Brightstar meowed sternly. The elders seemed satisfied with his answer and the seemed to calm down. Crowclaw, the deputy, stood up and said from the middle of the crowd and said, "We should send out more patrols."
Brightstar nodded and mrowed in agreement. "Good idea Crowclaw. You'll see to that." he said. "This Clan meeting is over."  The crowd broke up and gathered in small groups around the camp.  Runningpaw was still standing in the same spot next to Moonpaw. "Do you think the dogs will come here?" he asked. Moonpaw shrugged. "I dont know. The elders' story scared me enough already" she admitted. Moonpaw meowed goodbye and wandered to the fresh kill pile and took a pigeon from the pile. After she finished, Moonpaw walked back to her den, with a full belly and mind.
