Silverpaw heard the soft rustling of grass, as she stalked closer and closer to the rabbit she was hunting.
Half a moon had passed since she had been made an apprentice, and this was Silverpaw's first hunting assessment. All of Silverpaw's concentration was on the rabbit. The rabbit hoped closer to the gorse thicket she was using for cover. Silverpaw leapt out of the gorse and landed on it, killing it with a swift bite.
"Good catch!" a voice called out. Silverpaw turned to see her litter-mate, Foxpaw, padding towards her with his tail fluffed out with excitement. "Foxpaw! I'm doing an assessment right now! Rosecloud could be watching." yowled Silverpaw. Foxpaw's eyes widened at her tone. "Sorry. I'm on a solo hunting patrol. I better go." Foxpaw meowed. Silverpaw saw the hurt in his eyes and she rushed over to him. "I'm sorry, I just dont want to get into trouble. You know I wouldn't yet at you Foxpaw." Her brother nodded, his eyes lighting up. "Don't worry about it, I understand. I'll see you in camp!"Foxpaw licked Silverpaw's ear and bounded away. Silverpaw meowed another goodbye tonher brother before bounding away to her fresh-kill. She buried her rabbit and walked towards Outlook Rock. There must be prey here, she thought. Silverpaw scented the air. "Mouse." she told herself. She crouched and followed the little squeakes it made. A heart beat later she pounced and killed it with one blow.
Silverpaw looked up from her catch. There was a new scent. "Hawkwing?" she meowed. She turned to see Hawkwing and Rosecloud, sitting side by side watching her. Hawkwing looked as if he would burst with pride. They had both been so busy that Silverpaw barely ever saw him.
"Great job Silverpaw." Rosecloud meowed. "Your great at stalking and scenting your prey. You've passed the assessment."
Silverpaw felt her pale tabby and white fur bush up with pride. Hawkwing looked happy but his tail twitched nervously. "Since you've done so well," Rosecloud began. "I'm going to tell Brightstar, that your ready to go to the Gathering." she meowed proudly.
Silver gasped, her whiskers quivered with excitement. The Gathering was tonight! It would be her first one! "Thank you so much Rosecloud!" yelled Silverpaw. Rosecloud let out an amused purr. "You can keep hunting if you'd like. I have a patrol to get to." Rosecloud mewed as she waved her tail to say goodbye.
Hawkwing stayed where he was. He looked nervous, his tail was still twitching. "Hawkwing are you OK?" Silverpaw asked. Hawkwing hesitated. "Do you recognize this place, like an early memory?"
The question surprised her, but Silverpaw gave a shy answer.
"Um... T-The elders say that you found me and Foxpaw here. That's all I know." Moonpaw stammered. Her father looked as if he was... Sad, and Silverpaw was unsure of why. She wanted to know more. "...Can you tell me about my mother?"she asked. Hawkwing sighed. He raised his head and looked her directly in the eyes. "Your mother, was a kitty pet and brought you here so I would find you and take you to camp. She... Wanted you kits to have a better life. And to her the life of a warrior was a fsr more nobler cause." he said. Silverpaw felt conflicted. Did her mother not care about her and Foxpaw? "She loved you very much," continued Hawkwing, almost as if he read her mind. Silverpaw nodded.
"How's training?!" Hawkwing quickly added. He obviously wanted to change the subject. "Its great. Rosecloud has taught me so much. " Silverpaw meowed. "I'd better go get ready for the Gathering."
Hawkwing nodded. Silverpaw meowed goodbye and raced to camp. When she arrived everyone was chattering, eating, or grooming their fur. She saw Foxpaw talking with Sunpaw,Runningpaw, and Stormpaw. She pushed her thoughts aside and padded up to them. "Hi guys!" said Silverpaw. Sunpaw looked up. "Oh, hi Silverpaw."
"Are you guys going to the Gathering?" asked Silverpaw. Stormpaw sighed. "I can't. I got in trouble for clawing Runningpaw in battle training today." He mewed regretfully. Runningpaw hissed at his brother. "Serves you right mouse-brain!" Runningpaw spat. Silverpaw could see claw marks on his shoulder. "Wow those marks look real fatal, Runningpaw." she mewed jokingly. The others purred in amusement, but Runningpaw only lashed his tail."Knock it off, besides any mark looks fatal to a kitty-p..."
Runningpaw stopped himself before he could finish. Silverpaw already knew what he was going to say. She glared at him. "Sorry... You were playing I'll take a joke next time." he meowed, his ears flat with embarrassment.
"Runningpaw you need to just relax sometimes, you're always tense. Anyways, I can go to the Gathering too." Foxpaw meowed excitedly, trying to lighten the mood again. "So can me and Runningpaw." Sunpaw said. Her ginger and white pelt was fluffed up in excitement. Foxpaw was grooming his own dark ginger pelt, but his eyes gave away his eagerness.
Suddenly, Brightstar let out a yowl. "The cats going to the Gathering are," he yelled. "Wrenwhisker, Heathercloud, Birdsong, Crowclaw, Rosecloud," he continued. " Dustclaw,Gorsepaw, Runningpaw, Foxpaw, Sunpaw, and Silverpaw."
Silverpaw ran towards her mentor. "Can I stay by you at the Gathering, I'm a little nervous." said Silverpaw. Rosecloud nodded. Birdsong, the medicine cat was already walking past them, to join the group.
Brightstar flicked his tail, for every cat to follow. A heart beat later every cat was padding out of the bramble entrance of the camp. Stormpaw watched them go. Silverpaw saw a glint of sadness in his gray-blue eyes. He really had wanted to go. Silver paw ran up to him. "You'll come next time, don't worry." she meowed. The gray tom nodded. "Thanks." Silverpaw then headed to the bramble tunnel and began her first journey to Fourtrees.
