Moonheart raced down the grassy slope into the great clearing below where to other clans were talking or waiting for the meeting to start. Every Clan was there except ShadowClan. Moonheart turned to Runningstorm and whispered, "Where did the ShadowClan cats go? They're usually in every-cats business." Runningstorm glanced around. "I'm not sure... Maybe they're being held up by the snow?"
"That's what I'm guessing." a voice from behind mewed.
The two warriors turned around to see Hawkwing padding towards them. Moonheart padded forward quickly to greet her father. As they touched noses he said, "I know that we're in the same clan, but we really need more time to talk Moonheart!" Moonheart nodded in agreement. "I know!" For the first time in a long while, Moonheart noticed how tired and... old, her father was. His eyes seemed about ready to close, and his once proud gait had stooped to a slow run-down pace.
She shook her head, to clear her gloomy, sullen thoughts, and asked, "Do you think that ShadowClan has the audacity to attack us here at a Gathering?" Hawkwing shook his head. "Hopefully not. You know that once a Shadow Clan leader attack all the Clan's at the Gathering and he ended up getting killed?" The moment he finished speaking, Moonheart and Runningstorm's eyes were as wide as an owls.
"Why would a Clan leader do something like that!?" Runningstorm exclaimed. Hawkwing shrugged. "The leader thought that if he wiped out the other three clans, he would have power over everything." Moonheart shuddered. "At least ShadowClan is less... hostile now." she said. Runningstorm nodded. "Yeah. But, they're still a group of ruthless murderers who'll fight for petty accusations!" he whispered. Moonheart glanced at him in shock. Suddenly, she remembered Runningstorm's brother, Stormpaw.
The young apprentice hadn't lived long enough to receive his warrior name. He had died in a battle with ShadowClan at least 3 moons ago. Moonheart knew that Runningstorm was remembering him, and she pressed against his side. Suddenly, there was a yowl! ShadowClan had arrived.
Moonheart could see there pelts hurtling down the slope. They all looked well fed, but most of their eyes gleamed with mischief. What have they been up to? She saw Russetstar race towards the Great Rock to join the other leaders. As she jumped up Brightstar let out a yowl that echoed around the clearing. "Let us be thankful that ShadowClan has made it to the Gathering!" he declared. The leaders nodded in agreement. "Would you like to go first Brightstar?" Dawnstar asked. Brightstar nodded and stepped forward.
"Leaf-bare has been kind to us," he began. "We have made four new warriors! Foxfang,Moonheart, Sunflower, and Runningstorm!" Moonheart sat up as she listened to the clans cheering her new name. "'Wow'! The kitty-pet is pretending to be a warrior! What a fake!" whispered a voice loudly from behind Moonheart. She flung her head around, to see the same brown tom from the last Gathering she had been to and the battle 3 moons ago! He was sitting with his friends.
"You!" she shouted. The brown tom sneered at her. "Hey kitty-pet! How long was your fake training? A day?" Moonheart let out a low growl and she felt her claws sink into the ground. She suddenly felt Runningstorm's tail lay on her shoulder. He leaned forward and said, "Don't let him get to you." She nodded and turned back around. He's right, they shouldn't bother me. Moonheart suddenly heard the tom say something else.
"I wonder if your kitty-pet mother abandoned you cause' she was so ashamed of how weak you and your brother are!?"
Moonheart felt pure rage flow through her body. She let out a yowl and sprang at the tom. She scored her claw's across his cheek, and he let out a caterwaul. The clearing was suddenly plunged into darkness and everyone became silent. Not again! Moonheart looked up at the leaders on the Great Rock. They were all wide-eyed with worry;but, Brightstar was glaring at something. He was staring at her!
He leaped down from the rock and padded toward her. "What happened!?" he shouted. Moonheart stayed silent. "I'm sorry..."
