Moonpaw watched as the silver and black dog raced away. She felt a wave of relief crash over her. Runningpaw padded back to her side to join her. "You ok?" he mewed, his voice still trembling. "I'm fine." Moonpaw murmured, as she pressed herself against him. Foxpaw raced up to them a moment later. "We heard you yowling from the border! Hawkwing told us to come and help!" he said. Moonpaw could see in her brother's eyes that he had been very frightened. His dark ginger pelt was standing on end, and his green eyes were as big as an owls.
"Don't worry. I'm fine." Moonpaw meowed as she drew her tongue over his ear to reassure him. Sunpaw was next to them showering Runningpaw with questions.
"Are you sure your alright?! Did the dog bite you?! Did he show up alone?"
"If you two are alright, then we should head back to camp." Hawkwing cut in, his meow full of amusement at Sunpaw's questions. Moonpaw nodded and she began limping after them.
Soon the patrol was walking through the bramble entrance to camp. Moonpaw looked up to see the clan gathered around them cheering. What in the name of StarClan! "What's going on!?" Moonpaw yowled, to Sunpaw. The golden and white she-cat shrugged, with her eyes wide in amazement. Suddenly, Moonpaw heard Brightstar's deep meow ring across the clearing. "Everyone! We thanks StarClan that our brave apprentices and warriors, were able to defeat an enemy that has terrorized us for seasons!" The Clan began cheering once more. Moonpaw felt a wave of happiness crash over her. She had fought on behalf of her Clan and won the battle!
Rosecloud's golden tabby pelt was among the crowd. Her eyes brimming with joy and pride. Moonpaw raced over to her. "I'm so proud of you." Rosecloud whispered as Moonpaw reached her. Brightstar yowled, for silence and the hollow went quiet. "Let's let these cats get some rest now. They must be exhausted." he meowed understandingly. "Good! I'm taking a nap!" Sunpaw said. Moonpaw looked at Sunpaw. She only had a scratch or two from the fight. "Moonpaw," a voice called. Moonpaw turned to see Rosecloud. "Yes Rosecloud?"
"I want you to go see Birdsong before you rest." Rosecloud mewed. "Okay Rosecloud." Moonpaw sighed. She felt exhausted, and waltzing around camp wouldn't make her feel any better. She walked blindly toward the medicine den.
Birdsong was with Lillyleaf, sorting some herbs. "Birdsong?" Moonpaw called. The gray she-cat looked up. "Oh, you need something for your wounds?" Moonpaw nodded. "Yeah, I feel super sore, and that dog bit my leg." Birdsong grabbed some leaves and padded over to her. "Sit still." she instructed gently. Moonpaw winced as she put the leaves on her leg.
"Lillyleaf fetch some more marigold." Bridsong meowed. Lillyleaf nodded and walked to the back of the den. Moonpaw suddenly remembered the talk she and Birdsong had had a few days earlier. "Birdsong? Is there anything new about... about that dream?" Moonpaw whispered.
Birdsong tensed for a moment. "No. Nothing yet." she meowed curtly. Moonpaw nodded awkwardly. Why did I even ask?
Lillyleaf appeared with a mouthful of marigold. "Here you go." she mewed gently. After a few moments of silence, Birdsong nudged two poppy seed towards Moonpaw. "Here, it'll help you feel less sore." Moonpaw licked the seeds up. "Ok. Thank you. Goodnight." she said.
Moonpaw felt a surge of pride as she padded back to the apprentices den. She just wanted some sleep. Moonpaw settled into her nest, and saw Foxpaw batting his tail. "What are you up to now?" Moonpaw chuckled. Foxpaw looked up. "Everyone in camp says you and Runningpaw should be made warriors! That would be amazing!" he mewed excitedly. Moonpaw couldnt believe it! "Really!? But what about you and Sunpaw?"
Foxpaw's eyes dimed a little. "You guys deserve your warrior names. Maybe I'll get mine after you?" Moonpaw felt bad. "You guys deserve yours too." Foxpaw smiled. "Don't worry about me sis. You'll save me a nest in the warriors den, if you get your warrior name!"
Moonpaw laughed with him. "Okay then. Goodnight." she meowed. "Night Moonpaw." Moonpaw settled her head on her paws. Suddenly she felt someone settle besides her. She saw the black and white tip of Runningpaw's tail. "Oh hi." Moonpaw whispered. "Are you feeling better?" Runningpaw asked. Moonpaw pressed against his side for comfort. "Yeah I'm fine."
Runningpaw smiled, and put his head on her shoulder. "Okay then, goodnight."he said. "Goodnight."Moonpaw mewed softly. She felt something spark deep inside her as she laid her head on her paws again. She just couldn't find the right word for it. Runningpaw is just a friend, she told herself.
Or is he, a small voice said in her mind. But the thought never finished, because Moonpaw had already drifted off to sleep, curled up besides Runningpaw.
