I've given Thomas a worksheet to practice on. I'm not the greatest at math so I'm really not qualified for this but whatever. He works in silence for a while as me and Tweek play tic-tac-toe together on my notebook.
The schools loudspeaker comes on. "The school is now in lockdown. Please follow the procedures."
The librarian locks the doors and calmly returns to her desk.
The three of us all get under the large table, just as we had been forced to practice every semester of our school lives.
Tweek brings my notebook down with him. We continue our paper games for a while.
"Are you two- SHIT BALLS- not scared?"
Tweek shakes his head. "Nope. Why? Are you?"
Thomas looks away. "Of course not."
Thomas flinches when he hears the gunshots in the hallway.
Tweek smiles. "You are scared."
"We could die!"
"No, we're in a locked room. This happens all the time. We will be fine."
"This happens a lot?"
"We're in the Midwest, of course it does. If you're going to live in a redneck town you'll have to get used to gun violence."
"Aren't the police coming?"
"Eventually."
I smile at the paper. "I win again, Tweek."
"Damn it!" He quickly draws another tic-tac-toe graph. "I'm X's this time."
"Whatever you say, it won't help you win."
"Craig?" Thomas says. "Are you scared?"
It bothers me that his tone is a lot more caring than it was with Tweek.
I respond coldly. "Nope."
"I see... then we should be fine."
"Just focus on the sheet I gave you."
"Okay, you're right. I should distract myself. Thank you."
Tweek throws down the pen. "Yes! I win!"
Damn it, I was distracted.
Tweek turns to me. "Now give me my prize."
"Prize? We never agreed on a prize. And if you get one then shouldn't I get 5 since I won 5 times?"
"Come on, I was at a disadvantage. Give me just one thing."
"Fine..."
Tweek looks over at Thomas to make sure he's watching. Then he pulls me into a kiss.
I thought it would just be a peck.
It seems I have severely underestimated my boyfriend.
Within seconds he's frenching me under this table right in-front of Thomas.
"Mmh- Twee- mmmnn..."
Tweek pulls away and smiles. "Thanks."
I cover my face. It feels so hot I might die.
"You guys shouldn't do that in public..." Thomas complains.
"What's the matter? Still upset you can't have him? Hmm? Upset you will never be with this beautiful man? Sucks, doesn't it. That night at the party is the only time you will ever get anywhere near this."
Tweek is getting cocky. I should stop him. I don't like conflict.
But...
I don't mind him being protective of me...
