23 | thirty minutes of silence

a/n: look who's back for the summer! hi guys, this is so random and i don't know if anyone is interested in reading this anymore. i'm so so sorry for the long break. i have never gone this long without writing, so i must warn you this chapter is VERY rusty and i do apologize for it.

as i've been gone for quite some time now, here is a recap of the fanfiction. i had to reread a few chapters myself so i'm sure this will be very helpful to whoever is reading:

kate has rented a home in LA for some events for her new movies, revolutionary road and the reader. leo has been accompanying her for the time being and they have grown so close. the internet has been onto them for a while because they've been spotted being very friendly at red carpet events, and the paps have seen them together everywhere. kate and leo naturally started a casual relationship but ultimately did not put a label to it because leo has a girlfriend, and kate believed that she would be ruining his image.

so they part for a while, but then they both realized that they couldn't be away from each other. leo breaks up with bar and they actually start a committed relationship.

a few days later, leo is told that bar is pregnant, and bar says he needs to choose between kate or the baby. leo chooses the baby.

a few days after that, kate finds out that she's pregnant with leo's baby, then becomes hysterical and gets into a car accident.

at the very end of the last chapter, leo finds the pregnancy stick in her trashcan.

it took thirty minutes for an ambulance to arrive at the scene. that was thirty minutes the woman was left almost pulseless, underneath piles of deformed steel, iron, glass, metal, tire, and everything much more extreme. that was thirty minutes where he still did not know, despite attempting to crack the code with everything left inside of him.

for a crash that lasted five seconds, and as loud as a gunshot, even perhaps a little louder, it was surprising to have to bear the silence of afterward, where the damage was done, and four silent people lie motionless in their wrecked vehicles.

kate's body laid still. her eyes closed in the same manner as if she were just sound asleep, except she was not. red blood gushed down her forehead at a rate that seemed impossible for it to stop. shards of glass were on her neck, her face, her hands. her clothes were torn, cheeks already forming bruises. her right shoulder abnormally folded into her chest. tears still streamed down her face.

for thirty minutes she was like this. one minute more, her pulse would've faltered, her brain would've died, her heart would've stopped. by minute thirty one, however, she was carefully rushed out of her car and onto the solid hard road, and thank God for it.

"jane doe, early to mid thirties in a high-speed collision. patient is unconscious with irregular pulse and struggle to breathe. possible head trauma, spinal injury, and multiple fractures."

the EMT gently lifted kate's chin up and opened her mouth to open her airway.

"airway is opened. let's get her on a stretcher." he made sure her neck and back was secure, to avoid more damage if there already was. two other people helped to lift her body onto the stretcher, the last one opening each eye and shining a light into them to assess pupillary response.
