"Hey, I made it safely in case you were wondering..." The night was enveloped in darkness, nearly pitch black, as Y/N stood by a payphone.
"This is terrible news. I was kind of hoping I never heard from you again," Jerry, a good friend of
y/n's and also one of the lead Researchers in her freelance writer group spoke on the other end.
Y/N chuckled loudly, "likewise. Would make my life just that much better.."
"Okay, yeah, yeah, anyway," Jerry continued, "so you're staying right on the outskirts of the city or what? You gonna camp out in a field or something?"
"Yeah, staying right outside. There's this crappy motel, or 'otel' the sign is busted. Good news is I think I know where I can start."
"Do tell!"
"There's this gas station, like, dead center of all that. Felt like a movie."
"There's a couple of places there that aren't on that map I gave you. I had to make more calls than I wanted to. Is the gas station weirdly off the road?"
"Yes."
"No name?"
"Also, yes."
"Oh nice okay, I know where you're talking about."
"Okay so, I pulled over on this really empty road because I'd been running on red for about a mile or so."
"Uh-huh."
"And this beat-up pickup pulled over behind me while I was looking at that map, which is so not helpful, by the way."
"You get what you get and don't throw a fit."
"Yeah, okay, anyway. This like supermodel hick came out and asked if I needed help, and, well, I did, so he led me to that gas station."
"Okay, okay..."
"The place looks sketchy right away; pretty sure I felt the hair on the back of my neck stand up."
"Sure."
"And I go in, and there's this old man, and he's the supermodel hick's uncle or something."
"Supermodel hick's uncle, got it."
"I buy my gas, barbecue, drink, whatever. The supermodel's name is Johnny."
"Okay."
"So we're talking about my business being in such a rural place, and he looks like he's going to have a nervous breakdown when I brought up the missing persons cases."
"Alright..."
"I'm thinking maybe those kids had to pull into that gas station. Maybe he's seen them and just found out their fate or something. I'm just saying, maybe questioning the owner is a start. Again, only place there for miles."
"Well..." Jerry's voice on the other end trailed off.
"It's not the only place. There's a private property on there; it's mostly a farm, but there is a family home on the plot. Maybe they went there looking for Maria Flores? It's possible Ana Flores talked to the same people I did to find that out."
"Who exactly did you talk to?"
"Not important," Jerry snapped.
"Okay then..."
"If you have a notepad on you I can probably give you the directions based off where the gas station was."
Y/n reached into her back pocket
"Always, shoot."
"Alright, so from the gas station, you're going to want to go west for about 8 miles then you should be seeing more roads. Go north and I'm pretty sure you will be able to see what I'm talking about."
