A chuckle broke the silence, and Johnny glanced up to find Sissy's arrival.
"Johnny, cleaning up after himself? Can't believe my eyes!" She teased, a hint of sarcasm in her voice.
Johnny gave her a sidelong glance, taking in her appearance. "Well, well, where did you go all dolled up? Planning on running off again?" he quipped.
Sissy twirled in her lilac satin dress, the fabric swishing gracefully, perfectly complementing her blonde hair and vivid blue eyes.
"Like it?" Sissy giggled, her eyes sparkling. "I snagged it in the city today," she added, giving Johnny a playful nudge as she brushed past him and entered the house.
Johnny stuck his head through the front door as she walked in, a hint of curiosity in his voice, carrying the bucket and mop. "City, huh? Anything interesting happen there?" He hollered.
He couldn't help but notice the lingering scent of smoke that followed Sissy, mixing strangely with the unpleasant odor of blood and bleach in the air.
"Nothing, really." Sissy wrinkled her nose as she entered the house and caught a whiff of the lingering blood odor. She glanced back at Johnny with a playful grin and said, "Well, it seems like you've been up to something much more interesting while I was away."
"How in the world did you end up with that dress anyway? You smell like a furnace," Johnny called out.
Sissy brushed off his concern with a nonchalant wave. "Oh, you know, don't sweat the details."
Johnny emptied the bucket onto a patch of dirt in the yard before heading back inside the house.
Johnny stowed the bucket and mop back into the broom closet in the living room, the lingering scent of bleach filling the air.
"Nub!" he hollered, "How's it going with our guest?"
Nubbins' voice echoed from another room, filled with manic glee. "Perfect! Absolutely perfect!"
Johnny grumbled under his breath. "Better be." With that, he ascended the stairs to continue his conversation with Sissy.
As Johnny climbed the creaking wooden stairs, he wondered how things would unfold tonight.
Johnny knocked on sissy's bedroom door, waiting for a reply.
"Come in!" Sissy shouted.
Sissy was sitting on her bed, flipping through a fashion magazine, her newly acquired dress laid out carefully beside her, now wearing her favorite black dress.
Johnny looked around, her room was neat despite the peeling wallpaper, makeup scattered on her vanity being the only part out of place.
"So," Johnny settled into the chair at her vanity, eyes fixed on his reflection in the mirror, "any idea where Cook and Bubba could be?"
Sissy continued to flip through the glossy pages of her magazine. "I'm pretty sure they're on their way. You know they would never miss dinner," she replied, her voice casual.
Johnny's gaze lingered on his reflection, analyzing every aspect of his face from the curve of his nose to the line of his jaw. He couldn't resist teasing, turning to Sissy with a playful smirk. "You think my nose is too big?"
Sissy glanced up briefly, her eyes meeting his. She delivered her response with a hint of mischief, "I don't think your nose is the problem, Johnny. I think it's your whole face," before returning her focus to the magazine.
Johnny couldn't help but chuckle at her comment, turning back to the mirror, where he could still see her through the reflection. "Why do you ask, lady trouble?" She teased.
"Me? Never," he said with a wink,"there's just always somewhere someone can improve."he added, running a hand through his hair for emphasis.
