Y/n stumbled through the dense forest, her breath ragged and heavy. The weight of their harrowing escape pressed down upon her, and she could feel the exhaustion in her every step. The drenched clothing under her arm clung to her, the cold water sloshing and dripping down her side with each movement. Her feet ached, and her knees shook under her weight.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity of running, Johnny and y/n burst through the forest's edge and onto a desolate road. The contrast was stark—green wilderness giving way to the barren asphalt. Y/n's legs felt like jelly, threatening to give way beneath her.
Johnny's hand shot out, blocking her path, and he nodded in the direction of a line of deputy cars stationed on the road ahead. The sight sent a shiver down y/n's spine, and her racing heart sank.
They were far from safe, and their journey had only just begun.
Johnny glanced at y/n, determination etched across his face. He knew they couldn't stop here, not with the law closing in. "We need to go further up the road," he said firmly.
Y/n bent over, gasping for breath, her hands on her knees. "Johnny," she panted, "I don't think I can go any farther."
Frustration boiled over in Johnny's voice as he snapped back at her, "Well, make it happen."
Without another word, Johnny stormed up the road, his every step determined and resolute. Y/n looked after him, her body screaming for rest, but she couldn't afford to give in. She clenched her teeth and continued up the road, following Johnny's lead.
They continued trudging up the road in silence, y/n struggling to keep up with Johnny's relentless pace. The weight of exhaustion bore down on her, and her legs felt like lead. She couldn't help but wonder how much more she could endure.
Finally, Johnny decided they were far enough from the crime scene, and he began scanning the road, hoping for any sign of help. It wasn't long before they heard the rumble of an approaching vehicle. A pickup truck with a worn and rusted exterior approached.
Without hesitation, Johnny stuck his thumb out, a hopeful look in his eyes. Y/n, now crouching down in pain beside Johnny, couldn't believe what she was seeing. She muttered, "Are you fucking kidding me? We're hitchhiking?"
Johnny's expression didn't waver as he stared at the approaching truck. "We don't have much of a choice," he replied.
The truck drew closer, and the driver slowed down, eyeing Johnny and y/n cautiously.
Just as it seemed like they might catch a break, the driver suddenly sped up, passing them by without a second thought. Johnny stomped his foot in frustration, kicking up dirt and shouting, "Damnit!"
He returned to sticking his thumb out, undeterred. Y/n glanced over at Johnny, her voice filled with exhaustion as she commented, "Yeah, all the blood probably doesn't help our case."
The two of them stood there, looking at the road ahead, waiting for another vehicle to come their way.
Johnny, showing a hint of frustration, picked y/n up by her arm, forcing her to her feet. The sudden shift nearly made her stumble backward, but Johnny's strong grip steadied her. He firmly instructed her, "Then you stand in front of me."
With determination, Johnny stuck his hand back out, thumb extended, and gestured towards y/n. She placed her hand next to his, and they continued to hitchhike together, this time with y/n leading the way.
After some time, Johnny's sharp eyes spotted a van approaching. He nudged y/n a little closer to the road and whispered in her ear, "Look friendly." Y/n made an effort to force a smile, her lips twitching slightly. The van slowed down softly as it approached.
