4 days later....
The door creaked open as Alexander stepped into their apartment. A bandage covered his forehead and his bruises were now covered with the new blue shirt the hospital gave him. He took a deep breathe and switched on the lights.
The old grandfather clock ticked in the morning rays. The sofa was a bit disheveled, a sign of the day when him and Athena were cuddling on it.
It was the last time.
Everything was at place. Everything was intact.
But Athena wasn't.
Alexander stared into nothingness and continued to think about what he didn't knew himself.
He didn't knew when his legs carried him to their bedroom.
The bedroom in which they had many memories. His hand touched the bedsheets and he could feel his eyes pool with tears. He wiped it off but another tear came.
Atlast he gave up.
The dam broke and his tears knew no bounds. His fists curled up, clutching the bed sheets, as if he was holding onto the last memory of Athena. His world has stopped spinning for forever in front of his eyes.
Athena was dead.
Their child was dead.
He wrapped the bedsheets around him and smelt it. His body was shaking vigorously as loud sobs escaped through his mouth.
"Athena...."
He spoke.
Alex felt a hand on his shoulder and looked back. Athena was sitting in the corner of the bed, smiling at him.
"Athena, please come back. Please!" He joined their hands and kissed it.
"My time is over, Alex. I am sorry, I couldn't fulfill the promise of living forever with you. I am sorry I couldn't give you our child."
There was a long pause after that.
"What was my fault, Alex? What was our child's fault? Why were we killed? We never harmed anyone. Then why this little one was harmed? I am in pain, Alexander. I feel like burning. It is eating me up from inside. I have to go."
"Athena, please don't go.."
His sobs turned into pleas as he continued kissing her hand. His vision was clogged and he could feel the fever burning his body.
"Athena, I can't do this without you. We have promised each other that we will never let each other go. Then why today? I miss your touch, your smile, I can feel you every moment running through this apartment, your laugh echoing through the walls as you hop down. These sounds will torture me now, they will remind me that I failed to protect you."
"Shh Alex. It wasn't your fault. Maybe our fate is not tangled with each other. It's better to let me go. Bye Alex."
Athena stood up and started walking backwards.
"Athena no, no please."
"Forget me Alex, move on. You have your whole life ahead of you."
"I planned it with you. You, Athena Stone."
"I need to go."
And then she disappeared.
"Athena! No! Come back. I can't live without you. I can't. Please."
His sobs turned more violent as hot tears travelled out of his eyes. He was not ready to accept this. So he decided to end everything.
He slowly got up and went towards the balcony. The day was sunny but his world was immersed in the dark. He was fighting a whole different battle in his body. He stepped upon the railing and flung open his arms. The winds kissed his cheek slightly and then shied away.
He closed his eyes, remembering Athena's memories that will no longer haunt him.
"I am coming, Athena. For you."
Alexander thought it was over for him. But he didn't feel himself fall down. Instead he felt a strong hand wrap around his arm.
Opening his eyes, he saw a person wearing a black suit over his white shirt and a red tie. His messy hair covered his forehead and his hazel eyes shone with sheer determination in the sunlight.
Only one word left Alexander's mouth.
"Ivan?"
