Am I Forgiven?

Chapter 3

Alex too left for work after making sure all the doors were locked. He drove the car and reached his office. When he entered, he saw everyone standing and looking at him with big smiles on their faces.

Alex was confused. He wasn't used to people smile this much brightly to him except his wife. People, nowadays, don't go around being a happy and jiggly bear.

He entered the building, his footsteps echoing in the quiet pavement of the hustled morning that always graced its presence in the office, but not today.

His boss stood on the far end of the queue of the people. His green suit was sparkling by the opulence it carried and the way the corners of his mouth lifted on seeing him, it felt like as if he had brought any prized possession of this company, home.

"What happened, Sir?"

The man walked with large footsteps and hugged him. He aggressively patted on his back which made Alex choke.

"My man, the company has seen a significant rise in its sales after we have followed the way you planned. I am very happy today and so I plan on giving a raise to everyone along with a huge bonus. And you, Alexander Hall, you are promoted to my manager post."

Everyone started clapping. Their fake smiles shaking with the force of their clapping.

Alex could see right through his colleagues but he faked a smile and took all of their wishes.

They cut a cake and the boss promised them a dinner in behalf of him but Alex refused.

"Why don't you want to go, Alexander?"

"Sir, I want to share my happiness with my wife. She is pregnant and I want to be at her side in her every moment and share my happiness."

"Oh come on, Alex. It's not that your wife is going to die or something. You can enjoy with her later on." An employee named Marcus taunted.

"Marcus!" The boss warned.

Marcus hung his head and Alex just stared at him.

"It's okay, Alexander. Congratulations on being a father. You have my blessings."

The day went on with everyone gossiping around and completing their jobs before they left for their homes. Alex texted Athena:

Alex: Gotta pick you home today. Guess who got promotion today? ;)

Athena: Oml Cherry, Congratulations. Guess who just sentenced one of the most fearful dons of this city?

Alex: You won the case? Omg! This calls for an icecream treat🤯🥳.

Athena: Aww, my baby. Be quick to pick me up. We also need to go shopping for our baby.

Alex: Yes ma'am👨🏻‍✈️.

Alex switched off his phone and drove towards her law firm. Athena was already waiting for him outside her office. She entered the car as soon as he stopped near her. She gave a light peck on his cheeks but Alex made into a full blown kiss. He devoured her as if she was the last drop of drug he needed desperately.

"Woah woah, slow down there buddy. I am not going anywhere."

"I don't wanna let you go."

"Who said I am going? I am always there with you."

They smiled at each other and Athena kissed his forehead.

"Now shall we go? The shop is going to close soon."

They spent their small ride talking about each other's day and bickering about what type of clothes they need to shop.

They soon stopped in front of a cafe. The cafe was beautiful and had a garden attached to it's side. It was lit by small candles which created a soothing aura of calmness.

"Sit, while I go and bring the ice creams."

Athena nodded at him and proceeded to sit at a bench which had its back towards the lake.

Alex chose a mango flavoured ice cream for Athena while he got himself double chocolate ice-cream. He happily marched off into the park.

He frowned upon seeing a man sitting beside Athena, too close for his liking. But Athena was not concentrating on what was happening around her. Her head was resting on her arm as she stared at the lake with one hand on her belly. He was very intended to remove the person but in a kind way.

And then Athena turned towards him.

Her face was lit up with the candles and he could feel the happiness radiating from her soul. She smiled at him and Alex could swear on anybody that he was melting.

He took a step forward and then...

Bam!
