I stood before the mirror, frustration warring within me. "I mean, what else would she want in a man if not me," I sighed aloud. "I have purple eyes, I'm tall, I'm her best friend, and I hate to brag, but I am also very handsome. People would kill for a guy like me."
Jamal, seated nearby and casually rolling a blunt, responded with a hint of sarcasm, "I hate to brag," he mimicked, "proceeds to brag."
"What does she see in Damien and doesn't see in me?"
"Maybe it's the piercings and the tattoos, Brooke loves men like that ."
I scoffed, my frustration bubbling up. "Oh, forget that. He's boring as hell. Have you tried having a conversation with him? You'd fall asleep the moment he starts talking"
Jamal shrugged, lighting up the blunt and taking a puff, his nonchalant demeanor irking me even more. I couldn't take it any longer. I slapped the blunt from Jamal's mouth.
"What?" Jamal groaned, clearly perturbed.
"What's wrong with you? You've been smoking more than usual," I pointed out.
"I haven't," Jamal protested, his dark eyes subtly pleading with me to drop the conversation. Jamal and I had been friends since diapers, thanks to our parents' friendship.
I shifted my focus. "Is it Renee?"
"Dude," Jamal said, sitting up. "I don't get her at all. Not only is she risking her position, but she's doing it over a common gerist. An air clan gerist, at that."
"Aye, man, I think you should just let her go."
Jamal sighed, revealing his inner turmoil. "I can't. I really can't. I love her so much. When she walks into the room, it's like everything else fades away. My heart quickens its pace, and I can't help but smile. It's as if the world is suddenly brighter, and I feel a warmth spreading through me. Her presence, her grace, it's like a magnet, pulling me closer."
my confusion was evident. "Are we talking about the same Renee? That girl walks in the room, and I want to hide. She's mean and selfish."
Jamal defended her, insisting, "That's because you don't know her."
"We've been friends for five years. I think I know her enough."
Jamal, unyielding, maintained his stance, "But for real, I don't like how she's with the air clan gerists. He's going to be her downfall."
"If you really love her, you should be happy for her." With that, I shifted my focus back to my reflection in the mirror, admiring myself.
Jamal, unconvinced and still wrestling with his feelings, concluded with a hint of bitterness, "Man fuck that, If the source of her happiness is not me, she doesn't deserve to be happy."
I couldn't help but chuckle at that. "That's something to-"
Our conversation was abruptly interrupted by a knock at the door. Expecting Jamal to answer it, I was met with his sulking form instead. "Fine, I'll get it," I grumbled, rising from my seat to unlock the door.
"You better" he replied with a smug
When I opened the door, my heart skipped a beat. Standing before me was Denisha, her vibrant blue eyes locking onto mine. Her resemblance to Perse was so uncanny that it sent a surge of emotions through me. All I wanted to do was to wrap my hand around her neck and snap it.
"What do you want?" I found myself saying, my tone harsher than intended.
"You"
"Look I'm flattered but you're not my type" I said closing the door but pushed her way in, preventing me from fully closing the door.
