Chapter 45 - Surprise?

I had been working tirelessly for months and it was starting to take a toll on me.  He needed a break not only for himself, but also for Leah, who was now five months pregnant.  Our daily routine had become exhausting and I couldn't bear to see Leah so exhausted.

   One evening, as I scrolled through my laptop trying to focus on yet another work-related task, I had an idea.  It was a spontaneous decision that erupted from within me and I couldn't ignore it.

  "Why not surprise Leah with a much needed vacation?"

    I quickly closed my laptop, feeling a rush of excitement at the thought.  I decided to take a week off work without telling Leah.  I knew it was a risk, but I wanted this surprise to be perfect. I spent several hours secretly planning every detail of our escape.

   Leah was increasingly tired and stressed as her due date approached.  Little did she know that I had been secretly plotting to get her out of our busy lives.  I guess I'm just as caught up in work as she is in preparing for the baby.

   The day of the surprise was sunny and warm, the perfect setting for what I had in mind.  I had arranged for Leah's best friend, Isa, to come over and have a girls' night.  Isa knew the secret and had promised not to reveal anything.  Leah had no idea that Issa's visit was part of my elaborate plan.

I went to Isa's house and picked her up and she got into the front seat

"What if he feels it?"

"Then it won't be a surprise" We laughed and when we got to the complex we made our way to our floor.  Isa started knocking on the door and I had a feeling that the door wouldn't survive much longer. I know Lea And it takes time to get up because her belly is quite big already

I quickly unlocked the door and went to our room and Isa came in after me and only a moment later I heard Lea's voice

"Isa? But how did it get in here it was locked!"  Leah said and I could hear how confused she was

"No it wasn't locked you fool" Isa said and they went to the other room and I can't hear their conversation anymore

     As they sat in the living room talking, I could barely contain my excitement.

Finally Lea fell asleep and Isa came to me.  While Leah rested, Isa and I worked quickly and efficiently.  We packed her favorite summer dresses, sunscreen, and a new bathing suit that I had bought her just for this trip.

   After everything was ready, I left a heartfelt note on the kitchen table telling Leah to follow the instructions it contained.  The note simply read

~Pack your luggage and wait for me by the car.  A surprise awaits you~

    I couldn't help but grin as I placed the note where she would find it.

   Downstairs, Isa helped me set up a little picnic in the backyard.  I had prepared a delicious assortment of Leah's favorite snacks and had even brought out a bottle of non-alcoholic sparkling cider to toast their getaway. Leah was definitely not an alcoholic, but she missed drinking.

   As Leah walked down the stairs, her curiosity was piqued when she saw the note.  She read it with a mixture of surprise and excitement, her heart racing.  With a sense of wonder she rushed to their bedroom to find her suitcase packed and waiting. She was confused because the suitcase was empty or so she thought.

   Toto stood by the car with a big smile on his face as Leah walked outside with the suitcase.  Her eyes were full of questions, but Toto just opened the car door and motioned for her to get in.  As she settled into the passenger seat, Toto leaned down and kissed her softly.

"Open the suitcase dear" Lea opened the suitcase and was confused

In the suitcase was a small box and Lea took it in her hands and Toto nodded to open it. When Lea opened the box she was speechless. Inside was a beautiful necklace and their initials were engraved on the back and Lea was about to cry

   "Surprise, my love," he said, his eyes sparkling with excitement.  "We're going on vacation.  Only you and I.  A whole week to relax and enjoy each other's company before our little one arrives.'

   Leah was speechless, tears of joy in her eyes.  She leaned down and kissed Toto back, feeling overwhelmed with love and gratitude.  As they drove away from home and into the unknown adventure that awaited them, Leah couldn't help but think how lucky she was to have a husband who knew how to surprise her when she needed it most.
