Chapter 66

Toto feels a pang of guilt as he kisses Leah's forehead and ruffles Jack's hair. He hates having to leave them when they're so calm and peaceful together. But duty calls, and he knows that he has to attend to the matter at hand.
"I'll be back as soon as I can," he says again, his voice firm but tender.
Leah nods, her expression understanding. She knows how much his job means to him, and she knows that he wouldn't leave if it wasn't important.
Toto grabs his keys and heads out the door, feeling the weight of responsibility on his shoulders

Toto's mind stays focused on the matter at hand and the work he has to attend to in the office, but a small part of him remains wrapped up in his thoughts about his wonderful family. Despite his determination to concentrate on the task at hand, he can't help but feel an ache of separation. He loves his work, but he also loves his family more than anything. And it's always tough to tear himself away from their presence.

He arrives at the office and dives into the task, fully immersed in sorting out the urgent issue that required his attention.
The hours drag on, and Toto works tirelessly to resolve the matter, his mind fully engaged in the process. He can't help but steal a thought or two about his family, picturing Leah and Jack cozy at home. But he shakes those thoughts away and forces himself to stay focused.

He pushes on, working diligently until the task is eventually completed. Finally, with a sigh of relief, he finishes up and takes a moment to massage his temples, feeling the exhaustion and tension starting to sink in.
Toto glances at his watch and realizes it's already 9 pm. He hadn't realized how much time had passed while he was engrossed in his work. He rises from his chair and looks out the office window, noticing the dark sky and the distant street lights.
He sighs, feeling a mix of relief and exhaustion. He feels satisfied with the job he did, but he also feels a deep longing to see his family.

Leah and Jack are still at home, the hours slipping by quietly as they wait for Toto's return. Night has fallen, and Leah tucks Jack into their bed, reading him a bedtime story. Jack's eyes keep drooping, but he resists sleep, eagerly awaiting his father's return.Despite being sleepy, Jack fights the tiredness, wanting to stay awake to greet Toto when he returns home. Amelie notices his struggle and gently pats his head, understanding his anticipation.

"Daddy will be home soon, sweetheart," she says softly, her voice laden with warmth.

Jack's eyes droop even more at Amelie's soothing words, but he stubbornly keeps them open, refusing to miss his father's return.
As the minutes pass by, the atmosphere in the home remains calm and peaceful. Leah reads Jack another story, but his mind is clearly elsewhere, his ears perked for the sound of the front door opening.

Leah glances at the clock on the wall, noticing the late hour. However, she doesn't press Jack to sleep, knowing how much he craves his father's presence after a long day apart.

"Don't worry, Jack," she whispers, ruffling his hair affectionately. "Daddy should be here any moment now."

Despite his best efforts to stay awake, Jack's small body eventually succumbs to exhaustion. As Leah pats his head and rubs his back soothingly, his eyes flutter closed, and his breathing evens out.

Leah smiles softly, feeling a mix of relief and sadness as she sees Jack finally surrender to sleep. She tucks the blankets around him, making sure he is comfortable, and gives him a gentle kiss on the forehead.
With Jack now fast asleep, the house falls silent. Leah carefully makes her way out of the room and shuts the door quietly behind her, leaving the little one in the peaceful tranquility of slumber.

As she turns off the light and walks down the hall, her mind remains on Toto. She wonders what could be keeping him so long and hopes that everything is alright.
