You were walking through the corridors of HQ, silently fuming. It was so typical of Eren to come up with a plan like this, and even more typical was the fact that you got the worst end of it. As you turned a corner, the events of the past hour flashed through your head:
...
It was after dinner, and all the 104th cadets were in their dormitory. Eren, Mikasa, Armin and you were sitting in a circle on the floor. The rest of the cadets were scattered around the room. Most were lying on their bunks, and Sasha was eating something that looked like it had been on the floor. Things were quite pleasant until Eren spoke up. That's when the whole started.
"Hey (f/n), we should hold a prom for all the cadets! Cadet prom!"
"No." You promptly deadpanned. Also that is a very stupid name."
"But (f/n)", Eren whined, "it'll be a way for us to get away from training and have some fun!"
"You wanna have fun, Jaeger?", smirked Jean from his top bunk, "I thought you were too obsessed with killing titans." While Eren looked for a projectile to aim at Jean, you silently sighed. Someone needed to teach that boy how to trash-talk. When Eren had finished getting his revenge, he continued.
"It'll be fun! There'll be food, not the crap they serve in the cafeteria, but stuff that's actually good!" At this Sasha looked up, suddenly very interested. "And we can invite all the other trainees, so there'll be plenty of people, and we can all bring dates. We can ask the superiors to come too, if they'd like."
"Yeah," piped up Reiner, "we all know that (f/n) would like an opportunity to spend some quality time with her beloved heichooouuuu~" Everyone laughed as you lunged across the room with burning cheeks to throttle Reiner. The only people that didn't were Armin and Mikasa. You made a mental note to thank them later.
You had had a crush on Levi Rivaille ever since you met him, and ever since a whispered conversation with Mikasa had been overheard by Connie, all of the cadets knew, even the ones that weren't part of your squad. The only people you had voluntarily told were Armin, Mikasa and Hanji. The last one turned out to be a bit of a mistake, since she started squealing and ran off to tell Erwin as soon as you finished telling her. The strongest cadet liking humanity's strongest soldier. To be honest, you were extremely shocked that the corporal had not found out about it already.
"We still need to take care of preparations though," you said after Reiner had been reduced to a gurgling mess on his bed, "location, invitations, decorations, food... and getting permission from the squad leaders. We probably need Erwin, Hanji and Levi's permission to pull it off.
"I can take care of the preparations, "piped up Christa. "I'll put up a list where people can volunteer to help as soon as we get approval."
You pulled your knees up to your chest. "I guess now all that remains is to ask the squad leaders. Eren, I think you should since it was your idea to begin wi-" You stopped midsentence, because you noticed Eren was staring intently at you. In fact, as you looked around the room you realized he wasn't the only one; all the cadets, even the ones you thought were sleeping, were looking at you like you had the world's biggest thing on your face. As their meaning slowly dawned on you, along with a cold sense of dread in your gut, you scuttled backwards like a crab, almost hitting a bed.
"Oh no."
"Oh yes," said Eren, grinning like a demon.
"Oh no no no no no. Don't do this to me, Eren. THIS WAS YOUR IDEA." At this point several of the guys were grinning forebodingly too.
" But (f/n)-chaaan," Eren whined, "we all know you're best friends with squad leader Hanji, and shorty has always had a soft spot for you."
You sighed exasperatedly. "We've been over this, the corporal does NOT like me!" Although most of the cadets were surprisingly supportive of you getting together with Levi, this constant meddling in your love life was annoying. At this, Armin piped up:
"But even so, you are best friends with Hanji, and she can maybe help you with Levi." You gave the little traitor your finest glare of death until he looked away and muttered "well out of all of us here you have the best chance".
"Mikasa can help you with Erwin though, right Mikasa?" Mikasa nodded. Eren gleefully clapped his hands together.
"It's settled then! Good luck, you two!" He started cackling so hard he fell over on his back wheezing. You considered stomping on his stomach as you left, but you decided against it. As you entered the corridor you and Mikasa went separate ways, Eren's laughter following you down the hall to Hanji's office.
...
"That sounds awesome! Hmm, i wonder who I should ask..." Persuading Hanji had been surprisingly easy. She had even agreed to help with the preparations as well as booking the training grounds. Now she nudged you and whispered, " You should ask Levi." You blushed and glared at her, and she chuckled.
"Will you at least help me ask him?"
At this, she sobered up a bit. "I'm so sorry (f/n), but you'll have to ask Levi yourself. I pranked him the other day by putting food coloring in his bleach, and he'll eat me alive if I go talk to him. I can point you to his office though." She started to raise her hand with the pointer finger extended, but then lowered it,leaned in and whispered conspiratorially "or maybe you'd like me to show you the way to his quarters?" She waggled her eyebrows at you while dodging a punch.
"I'll go to his office, thank you." The sound of her laughter seemed to ring in your ears as you walked towards the corporal's office.
As you walked, you thought about what Hanji said. You hadn't actually thought about who you were going to go with to the prom, assuming Levi agreed to let you guys have it, but you had assumed Armin, since Mikasa would probably want to go with Eren. You thought of Levi in a tuxedo, and immediately brushed the image aside. I wish. Although you wanted to go with him you knew you were never going to be able to pick up the courage to ask.
You arrived at the corporal's door much too quickly for your liking, and stood outside straightening your shirt and checking it for stains before knocking lightly on the wooden frame. Immediately a sharp, familiar voice from inside the room responded.
"Name and reason."
"Uh, cadet (f/n) (l/n), with, um, a request?" You congratulated yourself on not choking on your own tongue. Levi's voice seemed fractionally softer when he replied,
"Come in."
You opened the door to reveal humanity's strongest sitting at a immaculate desk wearing a spotless white shirt and his trademark cravat. His ebony hair fell over his forehead and his steely gray eyes appraised you curiously. Damn, you thought, more like humanity's finest.
"So what brings you here at this hour?" Asked the corporal, snapping you out of your daydreams. He gestured for you to take a seat in the chair opposite his, and you did, wiping your slightly sweaty hands on your pants. You had only talked to Levi on a few previous occasions, and never in private like this.
"Um, the 104th cadets would like to hold a ball of sorts as a way of relieving stress and for the purpose of letting cadets from different squads to get together and, um, socialize. We only need your approval, since the other squad leaders have already agreed."
Levi leaned back in his chair and you think you saw a glint of amusement in his grey eyes.
"And what makes you think I would agree to this?"
"I don't see a reason why you wouldn't. This ball would not be funded by the military, and it would not be during training time. It seems like a good way to relax and take a break from training, and it may well serve as a morale booster. And we could certainly use one in times such as these." You looked defiantly into his eyes, and a long silence ensued. Just when you started to think that maybe you had gone too far, Levi smirked.
You had never seen the corporal smile, much less smirk, in all your time in the military, but you could tell it didn't bode well.
"How interesting. Very well then cadet (l/n), I'll let you hold this ball. I will even allow you to use our training grounds for it." You let out a breath you didn't even realize you had been holding. "However, my only condition is that you will be my date for this event." You gaped at Levi, not believing your ears, and concluded that he was probably doing it to test your determination.
"Yes sir."
Levi's gaze slid back to his paperwork.
A minute passed with you sitting awkwardly in silence and Levi apparently absorbed by the piles of papers on his desk. Then you decided that you didn't want to sit there all night, got up and started walking toward the door. Before your outstretched hand could touch the handle you heard a rustling sound felt a surge of wind. In a flash you were pinned against the wall, face crimson at the feeling of the corporal's toned body pressed against yours.
"Did I tell you you could leave?" His hot breath tickled your ear as you fought to keep your breathing even. You didn't trust your voice to answer, so you stood there in embarrassed silence. "Since you are now my date, I want you to call me Levi when we are alone."
"Alright, Levi." You let his name, so often thought but never spoken, roll over your tongue, and you felt his lips twitch into a smile.
"I'll pick you up at your barracks." He pulled back slightly to face you, and planted a soft kiss on your forehead. You stared into his soft, grey eyes. "Wear something pretty."
As suddenly as his weight pinned you it disappeared, and the corporal returned to his paperwork like nothing had happened.
"Dismissed."
You took one last look at him, now signing some document, and opened the door. As you closed it you whispered "Goodnight, Levi."
As you strode down the corridor you felt your face break into a grin. This ball was going to be more interesting than expected.
