Ringing silence followed, during which they were looked at as though they had two heads and a tail.
Bertholt got up first, went over to Annie and gently shook her shoulder. "Annie," he whispered in her ear, will you to the prom with me?" Annie grunted and rolled over, so she was facing the wall. "M'kay." You thought Berthold was going to start frolicking around the room or something, but instead he sat on the very edge of Annie's mattress with a goofy grin on his face.
Soon all the boys had got up and were quickly approaching your bunk. One by one they climbed up, and soon it got so crowded that you were afraid you were going to fall off. Instead, you climbed down and sat down on the opposite bunk to watch the spectacle unfold.
"Mikasa," said Jean confidently, grabbing her arm "will you go to the prom with me?" Mikasa removed his hand gingerly and looked across the room. "Sorry, I'm going with Eren." At that moment Eren chose to smugly smirk and wave, which did not improve Jean's mood. He jumped off the bunk and stormed across to Eren, screaming obscenities. Eren just chuckled and started to taunt him. You decided to let them fight it out over the girl and turned your attention back to your bunk.
Connie had somehow procured a potato and was dangling it in front of Sasha like a ring. "Go to the prom with me?" Sashas hand flew out at the speed of light and grabbed it. "Mmhrmph" she said through a mouthful of food. Meanwhile, Reiner grabbed Christa's shoulders and panted (because climbing up bunks is very tiresome) "Christa will you go to the prom with me?" Ymir abruptly pulled Christa away from him and punched Reiner in the gut. As Reiner doubled over wheezing, Christa apologetically said "I'm so sorry, Reiner, but Ymir and I have to help organize the event. I'll come find you when I'm free if you'd like to dance, okay?" Christa gave him her trademark smile, and Reiner climbed down and returned to his own bunk, looking slightly dazed and apparently oblivious to the daggers Ymir was staring at him.
You suddenly looked around to see Armin quietly sit down next to you. "Don't you have anyone you'd like to go with, Armin?"
Armin fidgeted and looked away. "Well yes, but she's already taken."
You automatically assumed he meant Mikasa and patted him on the back sympathetically. "Don't worry about it. There'll always be another ball, right?" You smiled to try to lift his mood, but he just sighed "I guess." and turned away.
When things had quieted down a bit you looked around the room. Connie was chatting with Sasha, Bertholt was still sitting by Annie while she slept and Eren was smirking snarkily. In the farthest corner of the room, Reiner sat curled up poking at the wall with a stick. (I don't even know.) Armin was next to him, apparently trying to make him feel better over not having a date for the prom. Marco was also trying, and it seemed succeeding, to calm Jean down. He'd dragged him off Eren and was patting his back. You heard him calmy say "Don't worry, Jean. We'll work it out." "Yeah." Jean replied.
After a long time, things finally settled down and all the girls reconverged on your bunk. Except for Annie who was still sleeping.
"We need to go buy dresses!" chirped Christa delightedly.
Mikasa leaned in and quietly whispered "And I suppose we need to dress you up nicely for the corporal, don't we?" You blushed and glared at her, and she smirked.
"Alright," said Sasha, "Let's go tomorrow! And bring Hanji along too, (f/n), because we'll need a grown-up woman's opinion. Or rather, " she leaned in closer to you and pulled a face "you might." You swatted her aside, and an hour or so later you fell asleep in your bunk, wondering what the next day had in store.
...
Turns out the day had nothing in store but hours after hours of Hanji-induced hell. As soon as she showed up at your barracks in the morning and listened intently to Sasha telling her about your date with Levi with this really disconcerting smile on her face, you knew nothing good was coming out of it. Now, as you stood in a dress-store with Christa, Ymir, Sasha, Mikasa and Hanji (Annie had refused to come, saying that she would wear her usual hoodie and pants thank you very much) and stared at the ridiculous scrap of fabric Hanji held in her hands, you began to realize this day could not end soon enough.
"Oh my God, Hanji!" You hissed, cheeks turning crimson as Sasha and Ymir cackled behind you, "I'm going to a prom, not a frigging strip club! What exactly do you think I'm going to be doing in that?"
"Levi." Hanji replied simply. By the time you wrapped your head around what she was saying even Christa had burst out laughing.
"OH MY GOD HANJI NO DON'T DO THIS YOU KNOW IT'S NOT LIKE THAT JESUS WOMAN WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU" By this time you were ready to faint from embarrassment, but Hanji just shrugged.
"Besides, I want to see Levi completely swoon for you. You forget that we've never seen Levi in love either, we want to know how he acts."
"AND YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE THIS BY HAVING ME GOING TO THE PROM HALFNAKED?!?!?"
"At least try it on," sighed Hanji. "Or else," her eyes glinted dangerously behind her glasses "I might just accidentally tell Levi you have a crush on him."
You gasped. "Hanji, you wouldn't."
"I would. Now try it on." You glared at the bespectacled woman.
"Fine," you muttered. "Don't just stand here then, " you hissed to the other, still-grinning girls, "find your own dresses. I want to get out of this hellhole as soon as possible."
...
After an hour, and copious amounts of glaring and blackmail, the six of you left the store, each holding a bag. The other girls were laughing, Hanji was grinning, and you were glaring at her like you were plotting her untimely demise. Which at this point, you sort of were.
"Did she make you buy it?" asked Mikasa sympathetically. "Yeah." you sighed. You had done everything in your power to protest, but in the end the threat of telling Levi about your feelings won out.
"At least I got her to let me wear stockings with it. Some good that'll do though." You sighed again, and Mikasa smiled at you apologetically.
Up ahead, Hanji yelled "Now to the shoe-store! And after that we can all go shopping for accessories, and then get manicures, and maybe even get our hair done if we have time!
You moaned. Hanji paid it no attention whatsoever.
...
The rest of the day passed in a much better way than it had begun. You bought a nice necklace to fit your dress, if you could call it that, and during the manicure the others were talking about their own dates, which gave you a much-appreciated break from having your love life being scrutinized. You were almost disappointed when Hanji said that you didn't have time to do your hair together, but that she would do it for you the following day.
...
On the day of the prom, you woke up early and helped Christa and team out with decorations and food. (The last part mainly involved keeping Sasha away from it.) By the time you were done the normally drab training grounds had been transformed into a great courtyard. In the center was a huge dancefloor. Lanterns hung here and there, and food lay around in heaps on the tables. Mikasa had even somehow procured a bunch of fireflies, but they would most certainly have flown away by the time the ball began. The only place that seemed untouched was the lake, it's calm surface occasionally distorted by a slight breeze. (Yes, there is totally a lake on the training ground what are you saying) While you were helping Eren, who had turned into a titan for the occasion and was lifting beams to build a crude stage for the band that Christa had hired, you looked around at everyone helping. You were puzzled, and slightly annoyed, by the fact that only girls were decorating (not counting Eren since Mikasa had forced him to help), until you saw Moblit run around in a frenzy asking people if they knew where he could get a tuxedo. You smiled to yourself, until you remembered what you were going to wear. The smile quickly dropped from your face, and you made the finishing touches to the stage in sullen silence.
...
Even though you were starving after decorating and running errands all morning, you found that you couldn't eat much at lunch.
"Is something wrong?" You were startled out of your reverie by a concerned-looking Mikasa.
"Not really," you sighed, pushing your spoon around your untouched bowl of soup. "I'm just nervous about seeing Levi again. And spending an evening with him."
Mikasa looked at you understandingly. She was the only person you had talked about Levi's kiss, and that was only because you knew she could keep a secret.
"Don't worry," she assured you. "If he hurts you, I'll beat him up and take his guts and..." You stopped her with a gesture. Mikasa's threats were terrifying.
"Do you think I should tell him I have a crush on him?" You asked weakly. Mikasa looked at you for a while, then nodded slowly. "Although wait for a while to see if he makes a move first."
"I'll see what I can do." You smiled at Mikasa, and she patted you on the back.
"What about you and Eren?" Mikasa's face made you laugh, but all she said was "We'll see."
...
At four o'clock you sat in nervous silence while Hanji did your hair in the bathroom. She was saying something about how she was so happy that Moblit had asked her to go with him to the prom. "Mmhmm." You hummed. Hanji looked at you reflection in the mirror strangely. Then she sighed.
"(f/n), I know your nervous about this, and I know Levi can act like a dick sometimes, but he loves you and you love him so go out there and have fun tonight!"
You nervously bobbed your head.
Hanji put one last pin into the bundle on your head and pointed to the mirror.
"Well, what do you think?"
She has pinned your (h/c) hair up in a bundle on top of your head. While it looked quite nice, the pins were already scratching at your scalp and causing you pain every time you moved your head. You forced a smile through teeth clenched against the stinging sensation on the top of your head that made your eyes water.
"It looks great, Hanji. Thanks."
"Now let's get you into that dress!
You stealthily jumped up from the stool and made a face at Hanji. "You'll have to catch me first!" And with an evil cackle you turned tail and ran.
...
Your brilliant plan was to evade Hanji for as long as you could, possibly by running around HQ, and then to return to the barracks when Levi came to pick you up, and then go with him in the baggy t-shirt and shorts you were wearing. It wasn't the best, but certainly less embarrassing than that... obscenity Hanji would make you wear if she got her way. It being summer, you figured you wouldn't get cold, either. It was already 17.00, and the prom started 18.00, so you figured Levi would come around 17.45, which meant you only had to evade Hanji for 45 minutes. Which was nothing. Or so you thought. However, this brilliant plan lasted for about 3 seconds, since the moment you came flying out of the bathroom Hanji yelled "Catch her!" And before you knew it you were lying face down on the cold floor of your dorm with Sasha sitting on your back and a grinning Ymir pinning back your arms. Sasha was wearing the yellow dress that she had bought, and Ymir was wearing her usual clothes.
"Mikasa!" You begged, looking pleadingly to your friend who was currently sitting on her bunk in the red dress she had bought the previous day, but all she did was shrug and mutter "Sorry." The little traitor, you thought.
"You are wearing that dress whether you like it or not!" sang Hanji, who at that moment came frolicking out of the bathroom. She knelt down and put her grinning face next to yours.
"Do you want to do this the easy way or the hard way?" You hissed through your teeth, and muttered "Fine" in a mutinous voice.
As Sasha and Ymir pulled you back on your feet, Hanji straightened your hair and handed you the dress. "Get in there!" sang Hanji and pushed you towards the bathroom door.
...
Five horrible minutes later the bathroom door flew open with a deafening crash. Ymir, Sasha, Mikasa and Hanji simultaneously looked at you, standing fuming with a face the color of your dress in the door opening.
"You look adorable!" squealed Hanji excitedly, running over to you and circling, looking at you from every angle. She pouted "I wish you'd take off those stockings though..." She fell silent at the look on your face.
"Aren't you supposed to be doing something?" You asked through clenched teeth. Hanji wasn't fazed.
"Well, I still need to do Mikasa's hair!" she chirped happily. "Unless you'd like some make-up?"
The look you gave her was enough.
"Come on then, Mikasa!" Hanji grabbed Mikasa's hand and skipped towards the bathroom and as the door closed you heard her say "Geez, she's almost as feisty as Levi these days."
Sasha cautiously approached you. "Well, (f/n), at least you got to wear your stockings?"
"A small comfort."
"Your necklace is nice?"
"And the front of my dress barely covers my chest."
"... Your shoes go very well with your dress?"
"My dress has sparkles on it." Sasha looked at you timidly, then apparently decided she wasn't going to risk getting her head bitten off, and instead sat down on her bunk and began to fiddle with the hem of her dress.
"Well, I think Levi is going to like this." Your head snapped around to see a grinning Ymir lying spread-eagled on her bunk. You briefly considered throttling her, but then decided against it, and instead sank onto Annie's bunk with a sigh.
"Whatever. I'm just happy the guys aren't here to see this."
"They will though," smirked Ymir, "I can't wait to see how the corporal reacts when every single guy at the ball starts flirting with you."
You stared some daggers at Ymir until got up and crossed to the bathroom to check on the progress Hanji was making on Mikasa's hair. Sasha hurriedly got up with an uneasy look in your direction and followed her. As the bathroom door closed you heaved another sigh and flumped down on the mattress, ignoring the pins that dug into your hair.
Your dress was red, like Mikasa's, only hers was a long one that went down to her ankles. Yours, on the other hand, just barely covered your butt and was held up by spaghetti straps so thin you were afraid they were going to snap. The dress had an extremely low neck, and to top it off it was lined with glitter, the bottom hem cleverly made to look like flames when you moved, and the glitter caught the light. To be fair, the design was nice, but you were in a much too foul mood to think about that. In fact, if you had felt less nervous and if Levi wasn't liable to show up any minute, you might have actually taken the dress off and sulked in your underwear. You were actually considering it, that is, until you heard a knock on the door.
At that precise moment Hanji, Sasha, Mikasa and Ymir emerged from the bathroom, to find you staring at the door as though your imminent doom was behind it. Hanji giggled. "Go on then, open it." You threw her the dirtiest of looks, got up, straightened your dress (although to be honest you didn't even care anymore), strode over to the door and yanked it open.
To your surprise it was not Levi who stood in the doorway, but all the male cadets from your squad, and Moblit, all wearing tuxedoes, even the ones that didn't have dates. Most of them were gaping at you, although Marco politely looked away with only a slightly raised eyebrow and attempted to engage Jean in conversation. It didn't work.
"What are you wearing?" Jean asked, awe written all over his face.
You glared at him. "Shut up, horseface." You threw open the door wide and let them in, as you turned to face Hanji with a look on your face that meant death. However, she was already at Moblit's side.
"Moblit!" she sang "You're here early! I haven't even gotten into my dress yet!" she clapped him on the shoulder. "See you in a bit!" she winked at you and disappeared out of the room, slamming the door behind her.
Most of the guys were still staring at you, blatantly disregarding their own dates, and Armin's face was the same color as a tomato. You sort of stood awkwardly in the doorway, not sure what to do.
"So, (f/n)," Reiner began slowly, "are you sure the corporal is coming? Because if not, I'm happy to be your date you're the night." Jean chuckled.
"Perverted pigs," you muttered to yourself. You were just about to go find Hanji and murder her, when there were three sharp raps on the door.
It's probably Hanji. Maybe she forgot something. Well, that saved me the trouble of looking for her. You frowned and threw open the door.
"Hanji," you began heatedly, "you and I need to..." your voice trailed off into a squeak/gurgle as you realized that the person leaning against the doorframe with a raised eyebrow was most certainly not Hanji.
"Eulogy." you let out a noise like a strangled sheep. "Um, good evening, corporal."
Levi Rivaille stood in front of you in all of his 5'3 glory, wearing an immaculate tuxedo and sporting his trademark cravat. His ebony hair seemed to gleam, and his steely grey eyes searched yours, before scanning you briefly from head to foot.
You could literally feel your face heating up.
"That's a nice dress you've got there, (f/n)," he said, only loud enough for you to hear.
That pretty much did it.
"I know that I look ridiculous thank you very much," you snapped before he could say anything else. "I have Hanji to thank for that."
One of Levi's eyebrows went up before he did that arrogant smirk you liked so much.
"Actually, I meant what I said, but I suppose you can't really walk around like this, can you." He leaned around you and stared at the other guys, who immediately began scrambling to find their own dates.
"Tch. Shitty brats."
Then he returned his gaze to you, and you felt your cheeks redden even more, partly because of your little outburst. You wondered if Levi would catch you if you fainted, but before you could wonder any more, he took off his coat in one fluid motion and draped it over your shoulders. "Put it on." he commanded sternly. "And button it all the way up."
You nervously obliged, gingerly sticking your arms into the sleeves and discreetly inhaling the scent of mint and tea that lingered on the fabric.
Next, he reached up and gently pulled out the pins from your (h/c) hair, letting it fall freely. As he removed the last pin he leaned forward and whispered "You look better with your hair out" in your ear.
By this point you felt much more comfortable, and your mood was definitely improved. Some of it was the fact that the other cadets had stopped staring, but mostly you were just pleasantly surprised by Levi's actions.
"Thank you, corporal!" you smiled.
Levi looked away and muttered something under his breath before extending his arm to you, an invitation to latch your arm to his. You happily obliged and hooked your arm through his grinning.
"Shall we go then?" Levi murmured under his breath, and you nodded excitedly.
Suddenly, your evening looked a lot brighter.
...
When you got to the training grounds you had to stifle a little gasp, and even Levi huffed in surprise.
Even though you had helped set the ball up, the whole thing looked entirely different at night. The lanterns illuminated the place in an almost magical glow, and the sheer amount of people there gave you a surreal feeling. On the stage you had helped build a band played music.
You glanced at Levi out of the corner of your eye. He wore his usual stoic expression, his face unreadable. Around them, the cadets from the other squads were whispering to each other and pointing at you, but your attention was focused on Levi. Levi who at that moment went "I have business with the commander." and stalked off, leaving you standing alone.
Your cheeks flushed, and you turned around to talk to the other cadets from your squad, all of whom were assembled in a clump, looking slightly awed by the occasion. Mikasa and Eren were dancing, Sasha was eating something, and Jean was talking to Reiner in an excited voice. You heard something about "spiking the punch", and silently congratulated yourself on having water before you left. Bertolt was awkwardly trying to make a conversation with Annie, and Marco said something to Connie that made him look at Sasha and then shake his head.
The only person who was not doing anything was Armin, who sat silently on the sidelines, watching Mikasa and Eren dance with a far-away look on his face.
"Armin?" you tentatively asked, sitting down next to him and poking him in the shoulder, snapping him out of his reverie. He looked at you and smiled.
"Hi, (f/n)!" he looked around uneasily. "Where's the corporal?"
You shrugged, trying, and failing, to hide your dismay. "He said he needed to talk to Erwin and left."
Armin smiled sympathetically. "So, are you hungry?"
Now you thought about it, you were starving. You silently wondered how you had failed to notice it before. "Yeah, sort of." you grinned sheepishly.
Armin got up and pulled you into a standing position. "Let's eat, then! It would be a shame to waste this opportunity, and if we don't eat soon Sasha is going to have finished it all." You giggled at your best friend's joke and allowed him to drag you into the crowd.
You had no idea how much time you spent with Armin, eating and chatting with the other cadets and teasing Eren and Mikasa, but you had a lot of fun, and almost forgot about the corporal. However, while you were laughing at a joke or kicking Jean in the shin you would suddenly feel a waft of his smell from the coat you wore, and you would quickly stop laughing and scan the crowd for the short man. However, he was nowhere to be seen. Once you saw a drunk Hanji wave around a glass of punch whilst ranting about titans to a slightly distraught Moblit. You even glimpsed Erwin once, but Levi was nowhere in his immediate vicinity. You considered asking Erwin about him, but decided against it, bitterly telling yourself that his location was none of your concern.
After several hours your stomach was full and the wall of people around you thinned, revealing a bare patch of land in front of the stage that apparently served as a dancefloor. As you watched, couples started trickling in as a slow song came on. You saw Eren and Mikasa join the small group, and even Bertolt and Annie soon stepped on. You tugged on Armin's hand, and he looked at you strangely. "Wanna dance?" you asked. At his nod you dragged him onto the dancefloor, and as the band began to strike a slow tune you put your hands around his neck, and he put his around your waist. Slowly, you swayed in time to the music. Eventually you closed your eyes and let Armin lead, humming contentedly, occasionally opening them to look at the gold flashes in his hair. Everything was calm, but you wished that you were being held by someone else... You sighed and continued to slowly shift from side to side.
Suddenly, a voice yelled "Enough!". The dancing couples broke up one by one, looking confused, and you and Armin stopped as well. As you looked for the cause of the disturbance, the music slowly ground to an uncertain halt.
Corporal Levi Rivaille came striding towards you, and his normally unreadable eyes screamed bloody murder.
You could literally feel Armin shrinking next to you, and you couldn't blame him: You felt like running away shrieking like a little girl yourself.
Levi stormed right up to Armin and pushed him in the chest. Poor Armin almost fell backwards into the dirt. From the corner of your eye, you saw Eren holding a struggling Mikasa back, with a look in her eyes that said that if she was set free shit was going down.
"Stable duty and extra chores for three months, Arlert." Levi snarled, and Armin quickly saluted and replied "yes, sir." weakly.
"You can't do that!" you exclaimed angrily. "What did he do to you?..."
Levi turned his full attention to you, something that would otherwise be nice, and glared murderously into your eyes, harsh grey meeting (e/c).
"... corporal?" you finished in a squeak.
Levi made a move as if to punch you, and you reflexively flinched. Suddenly, the ground was knocked out from beneath your feet, and you found yourself being carried bridal style by the short man. You felt your face turn the color of your dress, and for a moment you were too stunned to speak.
"Erm... argh... uh..." you stumbled feebly. Without a word the corporal turned back the way he came and strode towards the edge of the dancefloor, into the dark beyond.
You saw a confused Armin and Eren, who was still restraining Mikasa, look at you in shock, but before you could say anything they were out of your sight. The crowd that had assembled to observe the spectacle parted for Levi like he was carrying a deadly disease, and you caught a glimpse of Hanji on the edge of the group. You gave her a pleading look, but all she did was grin and give you the thumbs up. If you weren't being carried in the corporal's vice-like hold, you probably would have run over and strangled her, but as things stood all you could do was bury your face in Levi's shoulder and sincerely hope that you could die from embarrassment. As he left the crowd behind and carried you through the dark, you realized it didn't matter since Levi would probably kill you right then, even though you had done nothing wrong.
You walked for about 5 minutes, all the while with your face buried in Levi's shoulder. You had no idea where he was carrying you, but you certainly didn't want to break the silence first by asking Levi hadn't said a word since he had carried you away, although he emanated an aura that made you wish you could be somewhere, anywhere else, even though a small part of you still enjoyed the sensation of Levi's toned chest pressed against your side. He is carrying you to your death, (f/n). you reminded yourself sternly.
Just when you were wondering if Levi was planning on giving you to the kitchens for stew you felt the two arms supporting you drop out from underneath your back and legs, and you fell through air for a split second before landing on solid dirt with a loud thud. You made some very unladylike noises and looked around at your surroundings curiously.
Levi had carried you to the lake. As you craned your head backwards and looked across the water you saw the other shore, basked in moonlight. You wondered how good a swimmer Levi was, and if he could catch you if you tried to make a run (swim?) for it.
Then your attention turned to Levi, ebony hair gleaming in the moonlight and eyes narrowed into slits, and you couldn't help but flinch slightly. However, you were still mad for him dropping you on your butt, and that rage made you a bit reckless, especially considering the circumstances.
"What the hell was that, Levi?" you yelled angrily, your voice echoing across the still water. "You kidnap me, embarrass me, bring me to a freaking lake and then fracture my tailbone? What are you going to do next, drown me?" The look in his eyes made you thoroughly regret your outburst as soon as the words left your mouth.
"I could ask you the same thing, you know." Levi's voice was a deadly whisper. "What exactly do you think you were doing with Arlert?"
"Well, I thought I might actually have fun at this goddamn thing instead of just standing where you left me!" you flared. "Where the hell were you, anyway? Picking up trash? Because you were most certainly not with Erwin all the time!" Levi's eyes widened incredulously for a fraction of a second.
"I was watching you and Arlert, you know. Dancing. You are flirting with the other male brats. Why did you even agree to come with me if you were going to spend the entire time hooking up with other people?!" You were shocked at the normally stoic corporal's sudden burst of emotion, but soon your own rage took over.
"Excuse me, I wasn't aware that being dates was a one-sided event! If you were so damn bothered, why didn't you even talk to me once during the whole night?"
"I wanted to know why you agreed to come with me! If it was just because of your shitty friends or if it actually was because..." his voice trailed off, and he looked away huffily. You could see that his face was flushed in the moonlight, but you didn't know if it was anger or something else.
However, as you slowly calmed down, you started to ponder what Levi had said, and his actions throughout the night. The only logical explanation that you found didn't make any sense. Was humanity's strongest... jealous?
"
But it's all the same to you, isn't it." Levi still wasn't looking at you, but his tone was one of bitterness and... was that hurt? "Arlert, those shitty brats, me... we're all the same to you, huh." He turned away from you, and slowly began walking back towards the light and the people.
Your next words burst from your mouth unbidden. "But I don't love Armin or the other guys." You clapped your hands over your mouth, cursing yourself, but it was too late. Levi Rivaille slowly turned around to face you, his face passive.
"(f/n), what exactly are you trying to tell me?" You pulled your knees up to your chest and buried your face in your arms. There was no turning back now.
"I'm saying that I love you, you dick." You muttered as you felt your face heat up, frowning into the darkness of your arms.
You felt a whoosh of wind, and suddenly a pair of slim but firm fingers pried your face up from your arms, and you reluctantly raised your gaze to see Levi on his knees in front of you, his face an inch from yours. His breathing was slightly uneven, and he had a look in his eyes that you had never seen before.
"(f/n), I love you too." He breathed, and before you could say anything his lips collided with yours. They were warm and surprisingly gentle, and you melted into the kiss, getting on to your knees as well and putting one arm around his neck, and letting the other hand knot in his ebony hair (I'm so sorry I suck at kiss scenes reader-chan please use your imagination here). You felt Levi smirk against your lips, and just as you began to curse the human race's accursed need to breathe you felt your legs being swept out from under you for the second time that night. You yelped and threw your arms around Levi's neck as he carried you towards the water.
"Levi, what are you doing?" you asked, still breathless from the kiss. "I was joking when I asked if you wanted to drown me, you know."
Levi smirked again but said nothing, and you watched his blank expression incredulously as he began to walk into the lake, careful not to get you wet. His pants were soaked, and the lake water was probably very filthy, but he didn't seem to care for once. When the water was just below his waist and you could feel the gentle waves lapping at the bottom hem of your dress, he lifted you from his chest and held you at arm's length, over the surface of the water.
You froze, not daring to move in case you disturbed the delicate balance that was keeping you from falling into the water.
"Levi," you asked cautiously, "What are-"
"What is Arlert to you?" Levi cut you off. "If I hear anything I don't like, I'll drop you into the water.
You giggled at this, partly because his expression of grumpy jealousy was so funny, but also because humanity's strongest was surprisingly awkward when it came to romance.
"Hmm." you pretended to think it through. "Well, Armin is my friend, and I do really enjoy his company," You squealed and laughed as Levi's expression soured and he lowered you a fraction of a centimeter.
"But I don't like him like that!" You giggled. Levi lifted you back up again. You were starting to wonder exactly how strong the guy was to keep you aloft for so long.
"What about the other shitty males?" The corporal demanded in his normal monotone.
You looked at him gently. "None of them are what you are to me." Levi's expression softened, and he seemed to relax slightly.
"Alright, one more question." He smirked in a way that made you suddenly feel very cold, despite the warmth of the summer night. "(f/n), what do you like about me?"
You blushed. "You can't ask that, Levi! It's embarrassing!" He raised his eyebrows at you and eyed the water meaningfully.
"Fine." you muttered and looked away to hide your scarlet cheeks. "Well, you're smart, and brave, and your care for your comrades. You're not the worst looking guy in the whole world," Levi rolled his eyes and you smirked, "and even though you're awkward and never show emotion you always come through when it matters. And even though you're annoying, and a bit of a dick sometimes, and a clean freak, and also very very short" Levi's eye twitched and you had a split second's warning before you were plunged into the icy lake.
As you surfaced, choking and soaking wet, you grabbed Levi's shoulders and planted a peck on his lips.
"Let me finish! Even though you're all that, plus being a giant dork when it comes to trying to be romantic," Levi frowned and pressed you against his chest, apparently not caring that his cravat and crisp white shirt got wet, to hide his slight blush, "you're my giant adorable dork now, and that's all that matters."
You looked up at him, expecting some kind of show of affection, and instead his hand came down on your head and dunked you under water. You spluttered, snorting water out of your sinuses, and splashed water at him.
"What was that for!"
"That was for being an annoying brat back there."
A grin slowly spread on your face. "I knew it!" you sang. "Looks like even humanity's strongest can be jealous, hmm?" You were promptly dunked under water again, but as you surfaced Levi kissed your forehead and hugged you against his chest.
"Thank you for being my annoying brat." He whispered into your hair.
