Miley was paralyzed with fear while she watched her dad run around like a mad-man searching for any sign that Miley's mom was still alive. No such luck.
"Mija" Her mom would say when Miley was little, "Things happen for a reason."
She didn't really believe that right now. Was this an accident or did someone do this to her mom. She would find out.
"Hey dad?" She didn't really want to talk to him when he was like this but she didn't think he had called 911 yet and she knew that was important.
"What?" He said through sobs.
"Should I call 911?" Miley asked.
"Yeah uh you...you should do that." He stuttered.
Miley dialed 911.
"911 what's your emergency?" The operator said.
Miley explained the problem really fast. They were coming. A little bit later she heard sirens.
The police cars and fire trucks pulled up. The firemen quickly put out the fire and two policemen were talking to dad while two other policemen searched for evidence of what might have happened.
A couple hours later Miley had wondered down to the dock. She had her feet in the water when she heard her name being called. Miley turned around and a policeman was motioning for her to come up.
When she got up there everyone was just standing there looking at her which made it kind of awkward.
"We found some evidence. You said before that your on worked for the U.S. Government correct?" She asked sternly. Wow... Miley just lost her mom and the police officer wasn't being very nice.
"Um uh ye-yeah." Miley stuttered.
She held up a jacket. Miley had seen that jacket before.
"Is that my moms?" Miley could barely talk. Where did they get this jacket? Her mom had the exact same one. It was navy blue with the symbol of the U.S Government on it.
"No it's not. The person responsible for this fire must have dropped it. This is a really big lead. Do you have any ideas who it could be? Anyone maybe...suspicious?" She asked.
Miley tried to think, thought it's kind of hard when you just found out that someone from her parents work killed your mom. She also didn't really know anyone there.
""No I can't think of anyone. I only knew one or two people." I muttered, "try asking my dad." I suggested.
"No use. He won't talk." She said looking over at her dad with a worried expression.
Miley didn't really know how to handle this. Her dad couldn't even talk and her mom was gone. All of a sudden Miley got this flashback of all of her fights with her mom. They fought almost daily. Miley's legs gave out and she dropped to the ground. The police rushed to her.
"Sorry. I-I'm okay." Miley stumbled up off the ground.
"You sure? Maybe we should get you and your dad to a hotel or something. Where do you actually live?" A policeman asked.
"We um live in Utah. Salt Lake City." Miley mumbled. All Miley really wanted to do was go listen to Taylor Swift and lay in bed and wake up the next morning and have this be just a bad dream.
"Ok. Let's get you a hotel. Then we'll get you both on the first flight back to Utah. How does that sound?" The policeman suggested.
"No!" Miley yelled.
That must've surprised them because they all just stared at Miley blankly.
"What do you mean?" He looked worried.
"I'm not just going to go back home and pretend everything is okay. I'm going to help look for this murderer. And your going to let me." Miley didn't know where this surge of confidence came from but she knew one thing: she was going to help. Whether they liked it or not.
"I don't think that's a good idea..."
Miley glared at him. He raised his hands defenselessly and said, "hey just thinking out loud here. It might be dangerous for you, until we know who this person is."
Too bad. She's already made up her mind. "Nope. I'm helping." Miley smiled at him.
The police officers just looked dreadfully at each other like they've had to deal with annoying kids like this before. Finally one lady spoke, "fine you can help, but your dad is in no condition to do this so we still need to get him home. Do you have a grandparent that can help him get over his shock?"
"Yeah my grandma Rodrigues. She'd love to help." Miley replied. Grandma will be in shock too but she'll get over it fast. Hopefully.
"Great. he'll be on the first flight to Utah in the morning." she told another lady.
"You need sleep. You'll be staying with me and my family for the next little while if that's okay with you."
She nodded. Dang. Miley didn't think this all the way through. Staying at some strangers house...no thank you! But Miley guesses it's the only way She can make sure they are engaged in finding who did this to Miley's mom. Miley's family.
"Come on Miley. Let's go to my house now. They'll take care of your dad."she gave me an encouraging smile.
Miley ran over to her dad. "I love you" she whispered. Her dad looked up at her and pulled her into a hug.
"Everything has changed." He whispered.
"I know, it'll all be okay. I promise." Miley said trying to hold back her tears.
She walked over to the police lady's car and got in. She looked out the window. She's never see her dad like this and it's really hard.
"I guess I should introduce myself" the lady said, "my name is Jane Wood. You can call me Jane or Mrs. Wood or Officer Wood or anything you feel comfortable with. I have four kids. Jack, Jonas, Jennifer, and Joseph." Jane told Miley.
Miley couldn't really pay attention. She wasn't ready for change.
