chapter twenty ━ when he met her
( season four, episode two )

❝ oh, your problem is way bigger
than mine. ❞

𝐀𝐃𝐀𝐌 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐎𝐃 𝐈𝐍 𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐍𝐓 𝐎𝐅 Seattle Grace Hospital, debating whether he should go inside or not. It had been almost three months since he last had a sip of alcohol or thought about drugs—the longest he had gone since he was eighteen years old.

It was something he felt truly proud of himself about.

And he wanted to share that with his sister.

She had supported him when she had no reason to. In fact, he truly didn't understand how she was able to continue giving him second chances—and third and fourth—when he didn't deserve them. He had broken her trust too many times to count, but she always took him back.

It was the kind of person Abigail Juliet Thompson was.

Adam looked over when he saw Abby leaving the hospital at the end of her work day. Just as he tried to work up the courage to walk towards her, he saw Derek run up to her and tickle her in the sides making her laugh and hit him in the chest.

Her laughter echoed throughout the empty parking lot and a smile tugged at the corners of Adam's mouth. Her laughter was a sound he hadn't heard in a long time.

He nodded to himself before walking in the opposite direction of the couple towards the bar across the street. He hadn't stepped foot in a bar since he became sober. He looked around at the building full of people before finding an empty spot at the bar. He took a seat just as Joe approached him.

"Can I get you anything?"

"Uh—just a coke, please," he replied, clearing his throat. "Thanks." He glanced at the woman beside him who drank her drink in one gulp. "And—uh—another drink for her. What are you having?"

She looked back at him. "Tequila."

He nodded. "And another tequila for her," he said to Joe.

"You know, I've had a complicated history of men buying me drinks in a bar so I try to not make it a habit," she said and Adam raised his eyebrows. "But I'll make an exception this time."

"Any reason?"

"Does finding out you have a half-sister who works in the same hospital as you and keeps wanting to talk to you count?" she asked and he chuckled before looking back at Joe.

"Make it two, actually," he said before turning to the woman. "I'm Adam."

She looked down at his outstretched hand before shaking it. "Meredith."
