The hospital room was quite except for the machines beeping. Like all hospitals, it smelled sterile. A mix of antiseptics and other chemicals. Everything is quite except for the nurses moving through the hallways. Every word spoken feels like it's cutting the silence with a knife. Knowing the nurses and doctors have done everything they can and nothing is left but waiting. It tests the soul.
Two days passed before Koneko woke up. Rin refused to leave his side. They took him to the hospital just to make sure he was ok. The doctors ran tests, took x-rays, and looked him over thoroughly for any marks. They thought he had been bitten by something. His brain waves were checked, he was not in a coma. The doctors came to the conclusion that his condition was stress or trauma induced. The three boys had said nothing about what happened.
Rin was sitting in a chair next to Konekos bed when his eyes slowly opened. Rin sat up. Koneko had a panicked look on his face "Your ok, we brought you to the hospital." Rin said quietly. Koneko looked around for a moment before his eyes settled on Rin. Small tears were falling down his cheeks. He launched himself into Rins arms. Konekos body trembled against him as he cried. His breathing was short and fast. "Rin it hurt so much. I was so scared. I thought I was going to die." Rin held him, gently rubbing his back. "Your ok now. I made sure they won't hurt you again."
They stayed that way for a while. Konekos breathing settled and he stopped crying. Finally, he pulled back from Rin. Koneko suddenly realized he was not in pain and began inspecting his body. Checking his arms and legs. He lifted his hospital gown. Thankful he was wearing boxers. He rubbed his face. Ran his fingers through his hair. He was whole. He had felt every hit, every kick. This shouldn't be possible. "Rin, I remember hearing your voice, feeling warm and then nothing. What happened?" "Frist tell me how you feel." Rin said. "I'm not in any pain, if that's what you mean." Koneko responded. "Rin, how is this possible?" "I healed you." Rin said quietly. "I don't understand" Koneko replied. "I realize now that my gift of blue flames is so much more than fire. It's true power and its mine." Rin answered "Rin, people would kill for that kind of power, please be careful" Koneko managed to say. "I will" Rin said "now, why didn't you tell me that you were being bullied because of me." Koneko looked down. "They call you a monster and a freak. I know that upsets you so I didn't say anything." Rin took a deep breath "I've had enough of people trying to protect me from the world. I am a demon. A monster in the dark. Even people who still have the vail pulled over their eyes can sense it. You're right to be nervous around me. Please don't do anything stupid like that again." "Alright Rin." Koneko answered. "But you're not a monster." "No, but I could be. And that scares people. It should scare me, but it doesn't" "Rin, I'm always afraid. I wish I could be like you. Strong and brave. But I'm not. What happens when I see those three again? Or the next time I face a demon and I'm not fast enough? Koneko cried. "Look at me." Rin said calmly. Koneko slowly looked. "Fear will  keep you alive. If you stop being scared you make stupid mistakes, and that can get you killed. Learn to use a gun and a knife for close attacks. You are small, use fighting moves that deliver the most damage, very quickly." Rin explained. "And you don't have to worry about those three. They won't bother you again." "How can you be sure." Koneko asked. " because I convinced them that I'm the monster they fear."
A doctor entered the room. "Oh good, you're awake. My name is Dr. Drapa. How are you feeling?" "Honestly I feel great." Koneko replied. "Do you remember what happened? We have all been very worried about you." Dr. Drapa asked. Koneko glanced at Rin. No one would believe the truth. No one could know what Rin had done for him. "I don’t remember." Was his only response. "That's fine, " Dr drapa said. "I'll start the paperwork to get you home."
