I dizzily got ready.
Today was the day I make my comeback. Today was the day I made things right.
I stared at my enemy. Mere stairs now seemed like an impossible mountain trek.
You got this, Sebastian. Do it for you friends. Do it for you. Do it for her.
I rapidly shook my head, letting out a deep breath. I set my hands on the barren railing, cold to the touch, gripping it until my hands pained.
Raising one foot, and weakly setting it down, I followed these cautious movements until I made it to the portal.
But now, the portal didn't seem so scary.
I placed my hand on the door knob with a shaky hand, twisted it, then shoved the door open. An obnoxious squeak followed, causing me to cringe.
The upstairs was just as it was before.
Sunlight streaming through the cracks on the curtains. A saturated hue of oranges and yellows filled the world. It wasn't dark like it was in the basement. It was quite the opposite. Everything seemed lively. In fact, I felt alive. Yet there was no one in sight-
"Sebby?"
I turned over to see a ghost of a woman. She looked shocked, eyebrows crinkled in a confused expression. But her eyes said otherwise. They were sparkling, squinting in joy. Her rosy lips smirked slightly, she looked unsure, but happy nevertheless. That woman was my mother. And I missed her.
I slowly approached her, as if she were a stray cat that would scurry away if I moved to harshly.
Then, I did something I never did. Never, ever in my life.
I hugged her.
A tight and sincere embrace.
Everything was quiet, the only sound I could make out was the chirping of nature, and my mom's sniffling. She gripped my entire body for support, my hoodie now heavy and dampened with tears.
"I missed you, hun."
I smiled and nodded. "I know, me too, mom."
She pulled away, chestnut strands of hair laid in her face. Her eyes now sparkled of tears- happy tears. Smile lines indented her face. She emitted a warm presence that changed the entire atmosphere of the house.
"I have business to take care of, mom. I'll be back," I whispered, giving her a squeeze on the hand for reassurance. She seemed worried, her happy expression breaking slightly at the thought of me leaving.
After a moment she nodded and reluctantly left go of my hand, then shooed me off. "Go get her, then."
I stopped, turning to look at my mother one last time. She was deviously smiling, crossing her arms.
"Whatever," I chuckled and headed towards the farm.

The town, too, seemed just how I left it. Cozy and unbelievably boring.
Granny Evelyn was watering her flowers in the square, murmuring foolish things herself. The leaves had adapted to the wonders of autumn, strewn about the ground. A crunchy harmony hummed as I walked slowly towards the farm, building up a heavy heart with each sound. I was nervous. Beyond nervous.
I walked down the secluded path, past the bus stop, finally reaching my awaited destination.
The farm seemed well tended, the crops were flourishing, actually. Something I didn't expect.
Another thing I didn't expect was the door to the cabin creaking open just as I arrived. My heart jolted, adrenaline pumping through my veins as my body took control.
I flinched, then dashed to the side of her cabin where I was out of sight. Panting, I laid my head against the cabin. Am I even ready to see her face again?
After collecting my breath, I slowly peeled myself off her house and peered around the corner of the cabin, expecting to see a beauteous farmer filled with glee.
Instead I saw someone else.
Someone I never thought I'd see anywhere in Mae's vicinity since her freak out.
The brunette boy stood, as if he were the embodiment of sunshine, beaming in the sun. A letterman jacket was tied around his waist while he gripped a watering can. Tanned muscles and a sharp jawline that could slice diamonds. He approached her crops calmly, then slowly flicked his wrist, causing water to messily spew out of the can.
What in the world is he doing here?
