Akira
----------Her body shakes badly and her voice turns into silent cries as she presses her palm on her lips to stop them, I don't have any idea as how to comfort her.
Heck, I don't think there is even a way to console a woman who has lost so much in her life and still gets misunderstood by her own son.
Thinking of Romero brings a ache in my chest, he has lost so much, suffered so much all while feeling that his own mother did not want him, that she left him, that she gave him up.
That she didn't love him.
When that in fact couldn't have been more wrong.
She clearly loves him, just like the way all the other mothers love their children.
Not knowing what else to do, I get up from my seat, cross the table and taking the seat beside her I put my arms around her and pull her in for a hug, hoping this would help her even if it's just a little.
I hold her as she weeps for all the loss she has endured alone, for the pain she had probably kept to herself, for her own past self that she had to loose, for her son she loves the most.
My own eyes burn with unshed tears but I hold them together.
It won't do well for me start crying as well. I need to be strong, for her and for Romero.
She continues to sob for a long while before her hiccups slow and she seems to realise herself and starts to pull herself together. Letting her go, I grab few napkins and hand them to her.
"Thank you." She sniffs and presses them to her eyes.
After what seems like minutes, when she appears to be relatively calm, I return back to my seat and give her a glass of water.
She takes a few sip and closes her eyes for a couple of seconds, after taking few deep breaths she reopens them and stares dead in my own.
"That day I was forced to leave without my son and a fact I'm grateful for most now, for he was spared when I got into that accident, otherwise I don't know what could have happened to him." She shudders at the thought.
It sends a chill down to my body when I think of just how true her words are.
Rom hates that his mother abandoned him but if she hadn't, there is no telling what could have happened.
She looks calmed, so I ask her, "Why did you leave in the first place? Why didn't you just stay and try to work things out?"
"Stay?" A harsh laugh escapes her, "What do you know about us? About James?"
I try to recall everything Romero and Dante have said about them.
"I know that you both were having issues and that day you guys faught as well before you took off."
"Issues?" She snorts, "Every couple has issues what we had was way beyond them, it was disaster."
What could have possibly happened for them to become a disaster?
Didn't Dante say they both loved each other beyond anything?
"But Dante said you loved each-"
Her eyes flash, "Dante doesn't know many things that happened after he left to serve in the military."
"What happened?" I ask softly.
"Do you know how we met?"
I shake my head.
"I don't know my parents but I remember living with a foster family in New Jersey, they were horrible. I think I was eleven when I ran away and somehow ended up in an orphanage that was made under Catherine King's foundation, James's grandmother. And I met him when he came there for a visit with his father." A small smile tugs her lips, "He had literally knocked me over with a soccer ball. We were sixteen then and he was playing with other kids, didn't notice me crossing the field. He was so terrified that he broke me. He kept apologising and checking for concussion. He took me to the nurse and didn't leave my side for a long while. He wouldn't leave, not until they forcefully removed him by informing his father. He was rebellious kid."
