Getting Along

"So I think we have everything figured out. We have to decide what day we want to head to the party supplies store yet," I stated packing up my backpack.

"Well Tar you know I'm free whenever," Layla responded slinging her bag on her shoulders.

I chuckled and looked at Beck, "So what about you? When are you free?"

"Well I have personal things to deal with everyday," he grabbed his board, "but I have some free time Wednesday after our meeting."

I nodded, and said, "Okay, sounds like a plan. We'll just head over to the store the same time our meeting is."

I glanced back and forth between Layla and Beck as they both nodded their heads in confirmation. Behind them I observed Josh playing basketball with another guy in our class. A smile crept upon on my face as I watched his skill. He must have sensed my eyes on him because he glanced over at me. He had sweat dripping down his forehead, his hair was messy, but he couldn't have seemed happier. He waved at me and I waved back.

I regained my attention back towards Layla and Beck and they both rolled their eyes at me. I knew that Layla wasn't actually upset about it, because she was my best friend and she was aware of everything. However, I couldn't read Beck's face quite as well, but I guess that it doesn't help that I barely know the guy.

"Was she in Josh land again?" he questioned.

Layla giggled, "Yes very much so."

"Oh, whatever," I rolled my eyes, "You two can't just be all buddy buddy and gang up on me like that. No one likes an outnumbered war."

"Oh I still love you," she ruffled up my hair on the top of my head.

I giggled and started walking out of the gym with Layla and Beck in tow. Part of me was surprised that he was strolling out with us, but I didn't want to question it.

"And don't worry I'm sure Josh still does too," Beck snickered.

After the conversation that Beck and I had I knew that he was just joking, and didn't honestly mean any harm by it. Of course me being me I couldn't just sweep it under the rug.

"Oh you think you're a funny guy don't you," I remarked.

He replied, "Yes, yes I do. I mean I made Layla laugh."

I peered at Layla and saw that whimsical look in her eyes, which was weird. I couldn't quite comprehend what her intentions were with Beck. They were all chummy and got along real well, which I guess was alright, I just don't want her to regret her decisions later on.

I retorted, "Yeah well she laughs at almost everything so don't get a big head."

"Is that true?"

"Yeah pretty much," she confirmed.

"Damn," he muttered.

I rolled my eyes as a small grin appeared on my face. I hated to admit it but sometimes he was funny in a sarcastic twisted way.

The three of us kept walking throughout the sparse hallways as spurts of chatter filled our silence. The conversations didn't feel as forced or tense as they had been in the past. I think I made the right decision by keeping the peace between Beck and I.

"Hey, so I know it's none of my business," Beck stated as we stepped out the front doors, "but how did hanging out with Josh go this weekend?"

"Oh, why do you want to know?" I quizzed stopping in my tracks.

"I was just curious. Do you remember who pushed you to make that happen?" he joked.

Layla and I sat on the cement wall that was near the top of the stairs, while Beck just stood in front of us.

"Yes I remember, I don't have dementia. Do you remember that I did in fact thank you?" I questioned back grinning.

"That is true, I was there," Layla added.

He rolled his eyes and chuckled, "Yes I do, but as your personal cupid I would like intel on how well I did."

Layla giggled at his comment as I shook my head. Who does Beck think he is?

"Wow, well this was news to me."

"Yeah last time I checked I thought that was my job," Layla leered.

I leaned into her side, "It is Lay, but to be fair he did start the whole thing."

"Okay fine," she sighed.

"So?"

"I don't know if I should give you any details considering we just became acquaintances today," I stared into his green eyes.

"Terror."

"Brat."

He held his hands up, "Okay fine, it's your business and I won't push it."

"Thank you."

"He asked her out on a date for this weekend," Layla blurted out.

My mouth fell open in shock as I glared at her and slapped her leg.

"Layla," I reprimanded.

"And she said yes."

I shoved her entire body, "Would you stop it."

"Hot damn. That was a very successful time of hanging out then," Beck marveled.

"Oh my gosh," I uttered closing my eyes and rubbing my temples.

"You should have seen it first hand in person though," Layla chuckled.

"What is wrong with you?" I mumbled.

"What? You were clearly not going to tell him, and I couldn't hold it in any longer so of course I had to spill the beans," she answered.

"Okay, I get it." I opened my eyes and looked back up at the two.

"So obviously I did a stellar job and this right here just proves that I, Beck Johnson, am your personal cupid whether you like it or not," he smirked crossing his arms.

What has my life come to?

I rolled my eyes once again holding back a grin.

"Are you dumb?"

"Hey this is me being a better person and doing what's right just like you said earlier," he stated.

I shook my head, "Do you want me to yell at you?"

"Okay, well I think that's my cue to leave," he trotted down the steps, "Bye Layla, bye Terror."

"See you tomorrow Beck," Layla waved.

"Bye Brat."

We watched him step on his board and roll off down the sidewalk.

"That was something," Layla said.

I stood up, "You're telling me. I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone."

"You did the right thing though, I hope you know that. Having you two get along and not down each other's throats will make the rest of these two weeks a breeze."

"Trust me Lay, I have heard this talk numerous amounts of times now."

"I'm making sure it's engraved in your brain," she chuckled standing up.

"It certainly is," I giggled.

"He may not have the greatest record in school, and won't tell us his personal life but I know that you realize that he's not a bad guy at all," she added.

"Maybe," I grinned.
