"Well I'm letting you lead," Layla stated.
"Okay."
We were following Beck with a good three or four students between us. The halls were quite busy with everyone trying to rush to get out of here.
I tried to keep my eyes locked on the target. I had a slight disadvantage though because of my height. Every once in a while I could see him as students moved past walking quickly.
He stopped at his locker, which was roughly a classroom away from ours. We took the chance to pack our homework and books in our backpacks.
"Do you have everything?" she asked quickly.
"Yeah, I do."
I stood on my tiptoes able to kind of see over Layla and the rest of the student body.
"Can you still see him?"
I nodded, "Yeah, he's on the move. Let's go."
I weaved and dodged my way through the hallway with Layla following behind me.
At times it was difficult to keep my visual on him, but fortunately for me I could see part of his board in his arm. I knew it was his because I didn't know anyone else who rode a skateboard to school.
We were getting close to the front entrance door. The halls were starting to get sparse so we did our best to not attract attention.
I honestly don't think anyone is going to know that we were spying on Beck. Hopefully Beck doesn't find out either, because he would most definitely be angry with me.
Layla and I walked through the door as I watched him drop his board on the cement and use his foot to push off. We glanced at each other and briskly walked to my Jeep.
We opened the front doors, and got in as I rummaged through my backpack to find my key. I put the key in the ignition and we both threw our bags in the backseat. I shifted into drive, pressed on the acceleration, and off we went.
Layla turned towards me, "Do you think we'll be able to catch up to him?"
I chuckled, "Layla we will catch up we're in a moving vehicle. The only thing that he has to accelerate is his foot."
"Ah, good point."
We drove out of the school parking lot and turned down the street. He was skating on the sidewalk, but I was cautious to keep my distance so he wouldn't notice a black vehicle following him.
This whole situation was kind of funny to me honestly. It was like we were in a thriller spy action movie. Layla and I were the head detectives and Beck was our target.
The speed limit was only thirty five, but I was driving slower than that. I didn't want to catch him or even better yet pass him and then immediately slow down. That would be very suspicious. Thankfully he was leading us to a very quiet, small neighborhood. This meant that no cars were behind me causing a parade.
"I can't believe that we're actually doing this. Never in a million years did I think Tara Collins would want to play Sherlock Holmes and spy on someone's whereabouts," she spouted.
I glanced over at her, and thought about that comment. She was absolutely right, and honestly I didn't know either. Normally I wouldn't do this, but for some reason this time I felt like I needed to.
"Me either, I'm just curious," I admitted.
"Well don't forget that curiosity is what killed the cat," she quipped.
I chuckled, "Lay, well don't you forget that cats have nine lives."
"Well last time I checked you are a human Tar, not a cat," she pointed her finger at me.
"You have a point there."
Layla and I still had our eyes set on Beck, and he never noticed us yet. Unfortunately, a stop sign was coming up, and of course my luck a big truck had to pull out right in front of me.
Layla looked at me and smirked, "Do you think he has a big truck to make up his lack of size in something else?"
"Oh stop that," I giggled hitting her with one hand.
We came up to the stop sign at a four way and then I lost sight of our skater boy.
"Did you see where he went?" I asked.
"I think he turned down Maple," Layla replied pointing in that direction.
After looking both ways I turned down Maple Street, and recognized my surroundings.
"Why would he go down this way?" I questioned.
"Maybe he lives down here or something."
"Wait, why is he skating in the direction of the elementary school?" I wondered.
I slowed my Jeep down and decided to park on the side of the street. I parked near the edge of the sidewalk opposite of the school.
"Okay now this is strange," Layla uttered.
We watched Beck get off his board, and shove it under his arm. He was walking on this long path that leads to the front entrance of the school.
"What do you think he's up to?" I asked looking at Layla.
Layla shrugged, "I don't know. Maybe he has a secret kid that no one knows about."
"I doubt that," I laughed.
"Well, you never know, he hasn't come out of the building yet."
"Lay, he does not have a secret kid. Beck is our age, so he's practically a kid himself," I stated.
"Okay fine. You take all the fun out of it," she rolled her eyes at me.
I peered back over at the school and saw him walking out the front door.
"Well there he is."
As he strolled closer to us I noticed something kind of bizarre.
"Is that a little girl holding his hand?" I inspected.
Layla hit my shoulder, "I told you so."
I rolled my eyes at her and turned my attention back at him.
Consequently, Beck and this child were standing on the edge of the sidewalk right across from us. The little girl whom I got a better observation of had long blonde hair that was braided with a cute red bow on the end.
"Aw, what a cute little kid," Layla gushed leaning towards me to look out my window.
Unfortunately for me she leaned a little too close and accidentally hit the horn on my Jeep.
In that second Beck stared over at me, and we made eye contact.
"Oh no. Layla get down," I demanded slouching.
"Did he see us?"
"I don't know. But if he did I suspect that he's going to be angry," I muttered.
A couple seconds later I heard a knock on my window, and closed my eyes.
The knock kept getting louder and quicker. I had no way out at this point. I sat back up and Layla followed suit.
I glanced at my window and there stood a mad Beck.
I rolled down my window and shuddered, "Uh, hi."
