The radiant sun was casting a golden hue upon the landscape, illuminating the undulating millet fields that stretched as far as the eye can see.
Valli, standing atop of a rock, guarded the field alone. Her eyes scanned the place, looking out for any birds or animals that could destroy the crops. Her dark, wavy hair cascaded down her back, glistening in the sun's warm embrace, that also made her dark skin glow in an outworldly manner.
Unbeknownst to her, she was being watched from behind a tree by Kartikeya, Ganesh and Srinav.
"Wahi hai. Valli." Kartikeya smiled, he then looked back at his brothers, "Batao mai kya karu ?" He asked.
"Sabse pehle tumhe Valli ke man ki iccha jaanni chahiye." Srinav said.
"Lekin stree ke charitra ko samajhna asambhav hai. Yadi man mei 'ha' ho tab bhi woh 'na' kehti hai. Anubhav se keh raha hu." Ganesh said with a sigh.
"Param satya keh diya tumne Anuj. Valli tumse prem karti hai, lekin ho sakta hai ki woh tumhe pehle 'na' kare." Srinav said.
"Jab mujhe prem karti hai toh mujhe 'na' kyu kahegi ?" Kartikeya asked confused.
At that, Srinav tilted his head, "Stree kabhi pehle 'ha' nahi kehti." He said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"Toh mai kya karu ?" Kartikeya asked.
"Aapko pehle unse 'ha' kehwani hogi." Ganesh said.
"Uchit hai, mai abhi uske samaksh pranaye nivedan karta hu." Kartikeya said.
But just as he took a step ahead, he was pulled behind by Srinav and Ganesh, "Arrey ruko toh !"
"Ab kya ?" Kartikeya asked looking at them both.
"Bhaiya, yadi woh swayam ke samaksh Subramanyam Swami ko dekhegi toh kya apne man ki iccha prakat karengi ? Ya sirf ha mei ha milayengi ?" Ganesh asked.
"Oh ha..... Mai adrishya hoke jayu ?" Kartikeya asked.
"Nahi !" Srinav said.
"Parantu kyu Jyesht ?" Kartikeya asked.
"Maine prayas kiya tha, jab tumhari jiji mei mila tha. Mat karo, anubhav se keh raha hu." Srinav said.
"Kyu ? Aisa bhi kya huya tha ?" Ganesh asked.
Srinav sighed, "Vaikunth mei sabhi Devi Devta ekatrit huye the. Kintu mujhe kuch bahar ki oor akarshit kar raha tha. Toh vatika mei gaya aur dekha tumhari jiji ko apsaraye sajj kar rahi thi...." He closed his eyes as a smile appeared on his face, "Woh aisi lag rahi thi jaise badalo ke madhya Chandra..... Aur mai chakor sa unke taraf khicha chala gaya... Woh aisi thi jaise khilta huya kamal ka phool, jaise Surya ki pehli kiran.... Jaise apna koi varsho baad mila... Jaise-"
"Bhrata-" Kartikeya shook him a little causing Srinav to open his eyes and come out of his trance.
"Ha- Toh unko laga ki koi unhe dekh raha hai, aur fir woh uth ke kahi aur chali gayi... Maine picha kiya.... Fir sakshaatkaar huya... Aur unhone mujhse kaha ki 'Kya Shreeshaktiswar aise hi kanyayo ko sringar karte dekhte hai ?'" Srinav said shaking his head in embarrassment.
"Oh." Ganesh muttered.
"Toh mai adrishya hoke nahi jaa raha." Kartikeya said.
"Vesh badal ke jaao." Srinav suggested.
"Uchit hai." Kartikeya agreed.
He closed his eyes, and using his divine powers, disguised himself as a hunter youth. Even in his disguise his form was handsome and radiant.
"Uttam." Both Ganesh and Srinav approved.
Kartikeya smiled and then went towards direction where Valli was at. She had zoned out in her mind, remembering her lord Murugan. The afternoon sun was cruelly hot, but because she was lost in thoughts it didn't seem to bother her.
Suddenly an arrow shot past her ears, startling her. A gasp escaped her lips as she looked at the arrow and saw it had pierced a bee. She then looked at front and saw a handsome hunter man coming towards her.
"Yadi aapko chauka diya toh kshama karna. Kintu yadi aap jaisi sundari ko woh bhramar kaat leta toh woh kasht mujhe sahan na hota." The hunter said.
"Kaun hai aap ? Aur yaha kaise ana huya ?" Valli looked at him skeptically.
"Bhatka huya shikari hu. Akhet ke khoj mei nikla tha kintu sukanya mil gayi." He said.
Valli frowned, "Jo kehna hai spasht kahiye."
"Spasht kahu ? Uchit hai. Mai chaahta hu ki aap mujhse vivah karle." He said.
An offended gasp escaped the lips of Valli. While Ganesh and Srinav looked at the scene with perplexed frowns and parted lips.
"Aise thodi pucha jata hai." Srinav muttered.
"Aise toh ho gaya inka vivah..." Ganesh shook his head.
Kartikeya as a hunter kept looking at Valli with a smile, "Apne hridaye mei jo hai keh dijiye, Devi. Sankoch na kare."
"Toh suniye." Valli said folding her hands, "Lagta hai aap nahi, aapki buddhi bhi bhatak gayi hai. Uchit yahi hoga ki mere Bhrata ke aane se pehle aap bhi yaha se chale jaaye." She said and then turned to the other side.
Kartikeya looked at her, and then gazed back at the direction where Srinav and Ganesh were, both of them shook their heads in disapproval.
"Valli ! Valli !" Voices of few men resonated in the place.
Kartikeya's eyes widened realising Valli's kinmen were here. He looked at his brothers, asking through a gesture as to what to do. Srinav pointed at the tree and then at him, gesturing him to turn into one.
Kartikeya wasted no time before using his powers to transform into a tree. The very next moment Valli's father came along her brothers. They carried fruits and honey in their hand.
"Yeh putri, bhojan." Nambirajan said giving her a portion of the food.
"Yeh ped yaha kaise aya ?" One of her brothers asked.
At that Valli turned around and looked at the tall tree with a frown.
"Kshan bhar pehle toh yaha ek shikari yuvak tha." Valli said.
"Shikari yuvak ?" Nambi asked.
"Ha. Aisa dussahasi tha ki mujhse pranaye nivedan kar raha tha." Valli said.
"Kaha gaya woh ?!" Another brother of hers asked.
"Pata nahi." Valli said confused.
