Daksh and Diksha were animatedly discussing the latest matches, while Srijita listened as a silent spectator, completely out of her depth since she had no interest in cricket.
"If Rohit Sharma makes a century, it would be amazing," Daksh said enthusiastically."
Of course, right, Srijita?" Diksha chimed in, turning to her friend.
Srijita, not realizing she was being addressed, blinked in confusion. "What? What match are you talking about?"
Daksh raised an eyebrow. "Don't you watch cricket?"Srijita shook her head. "I don’t have any interest in it."
Daksh smirked, leaning back in his chair. "Or you don't understand cricket?"
Slightly embarrassed but determined not to show it, Srijita replied, "It's not like that. They play, they win, they get lots of gifts and money. And what do I get in return? Nothing. So why should I show so much excitement?"
Diksha sighed, a mix of amusement and exasperation. "Why do you always bring business into every matter?" she asked.
Srijita shrugged her shoulders.
"Because this whole world works on business only. See, even if India wins, will they do anything for the poor and local people in our country? No, right? They will remain as poor as ever."Both Daksh and Diksha opened their mouths to say something but found themselves at a loss for words, recognizing the uncomfortable truth in Srijita's statement.
Diksha finally replied, "It's not completely wrong."
"And it's a fact," Daksh added.
Srijita raised her imaginary collar, a triumphant look on her face. "I am always right," she declared.
After a relaxing evening at the café, Srijita returned home to find her mother waiting for her in the living room.
"Why are you so late, beta?" her mother asked, concern lining her face.
"Did you go on a date with some boy?"
Srijita chuckled softly, shaking her head. "Dating and all those things will never happen to me, Ma. I'm not interested in any of that."
Her mother looked at her with a mix of surprise and concern. "Beta ,I've crossed your age. Ive more experience than you"
Srijita remained firm in her stance. "Nothing like that will ever happen, Ma. I will never marry."
Her mother sighed, sensing her daughter's stubborn resolve. "You're such a stubborn girl. Only time will tell what will happen in your future," she said, changing the topic, perhaps knowing that Srijita wouldn't budge from her beliefs easily.
Srijita simply nodded, knowing that her mother cared for her deeply, even if they disagreed on matters of marriage and relationships. As she retired to her room, she reflected on the evening spent with Diksha and Daksh, feeling content in her decision to stay true to herself, regardless of societal expectations.
Srijita was having dinner with her parents when her father spoke up,
"Srijita, your Uncle Shekhar called me today after a long time."
She brightened instantly, "That's great! So, what gosip you both did?"
Her father shook his head, his expression turning somber. "
Not exactly. Shekhar's mother isn't well, and they're all heading to the village to see her. His son, Indra, will be staying with us for a few days since he can't miss work."
Srijita froze, her fork pausing mid-air. "Indra? Here? In our house?"
Her mother nodded, smiling. "Yes, isn't it nice? It's been ages since we last saw him. Plus, he can enjoy some healthy homemade food while he's here."
Srijita's irritation was palpable.
"Why here, Mom? He can order from Swiggy or Zomato. It's not like they'll poison his food."
Her mother scolded her sharply, "Is that how you talk about someone, especially a guest? Did we raise you to be this rude when relatives visit?"
Rolling her eyes, Srijita muttered under her breath, "They aren't exactly relatives."
Her father interjected firmly, "They are more than relatives."
Srijita was at a loss for words. She knew Indra from childhood but had never liked him. The thought of having him stay in their home for several days only worsened her mood.
Deciding it was best to stay silent, she grumpily resumed her meal, her earlier excitement now replaced with a sense of impending discomfort.
She resolved to mind her own business and avoid interacting with him as much as possible.
