The dining table is a vibrant spread of Indian dishes, each one meticulously prepared to cater to Indra's favorites.
Srijita's mom is bustling around the table, serving food onto Indra's plate with an almost maternal affection, piling it high with aromatic curries, fragrant rice, and delectable sweets.
Srijita watches this scene unfold, her insides twisting with an unexpected pang of jealousy.
Indra, sensing the overflowing generosity, tries to protest gently, "This much is enough, aunty. I can't eat more."
Her mom, her eyes twinkling with fondness, pats his head, "Beta, if you don't eat now, then when will you eat? This is the age you should eat a lot."
Indra gives her a grateful smile, "Thank you, aunty, for making so many dishes."
Srijita, unable to hold back any longer, interrupts, "Mom, I'm getting late for my office. Will you give me food or not?"
Her mom, slightly exasperated, replies, "Uff, serving. Why are you so impatient? Just wait a minute. I don't have ten hands."
Indra, picking up on her jealousy, decides to add fuel to the fire, "Aunty, are you getting some burning smell?"
Her mom smiles knowingly, understanding his playful intention.
Srijita, her temper flaring, snaps, "Jealous? Me? And that too from you? Not at all. It's just that I'm getting late for my office."
Indra smirks, "Did I call your name? Then why are you giving all this justification?"
Before Srijita can retort, her mom intervenes, "Now, no more arguments. Leave her, beta. You tell me, how is the kheer? Did you like it?"
Indra's face lights up, "It's wonderful, aunty. After so many years, I got to eat such tasty kheer. You have magic in your hands, trust me."
Her mom blushes at his praise, her cheeks turning a light shade of pink. She then turns to Srijita with a playful reprimand,
"Just see him. Learn something from him. You never ever praise me like this."
Srijita glares at Indra, who simply shrugs his shoulders with a teasing innocence. The room fills with a blend of warmth, teasing banter, and a touch of sibling-like rivalry.
Indra's eyes twinkle with mischief, clearly enjoying the effect his words have on Srijita, while her mom continues to beam at the compliments.
The house buzzes with the lively energy of family, the bonds of old friendships, and the hint of something deeper, something unspoken yet palpable between Indra and Srijita.
After having breakfast,
Srijita stands up and tells her mom, "I'm leaving for the office. If you need anything, just call me."
Her mom, glancing at her says,
"Indra is also leaving for his office. Why don't you go with him? He can drop you."
Indra, coming downstairs wearing a crisp shirt and looking ready for work, replies, "Haa aunty, I will drop her. No problem."
Srijita closes her eyes briefly, trying to summon patience. "Mom, I can go on my own. I don't need anyone to drop me."
Without waiting for a response, she grabs her bag and heads toward the door, leaving quickly.
Indra smiles, giving her mother an assuring look with his eyes, silently conveying that he understands and will handle it.
While Srijita is walking by the road, a car honks behind her.
She turns around to see Indra inside. She signals him to go, but he doesn't move.
Indra rolls down the window and asks, "Get in, I'll drop you."
Srijita, frustrated, snaps, "Don't you understand a simple 'no'? I've already said I can go by myself."
Indra smirks, "Okay, but if you don't go with me, you can't enter your office."She frowns, "Why so?"
Indra pulls out her office ID card from his pocket. "Because you left this behind."
Srijita's eyes widen, and she immediately checks her bag to confirm it's missing. "What the hell are you doing with my ID card? Give it back!"
Indra shakes his head, "Nope. Not until you get in the car."
Srijita taps on the car window in frustration. "What is this stubbornness? Just give it to me. I can't enter my office without it."
Indra replies nonchalantly, "That's not my problem. If you want it, come inside, or else I'm leaving."
He starts the engine, and Srijita, panicking, shouts, "No, no!" She looks around, noticing people are watching their drama unfold.
Out of options, she murmurs, "Fine, I'm coming with you."
Indra grins triumphantly and opens the passenger door for her. Srijita huffs as she gets inside, her face a mix of irritation and resignation.
Indra's smile broadens as he drives off, feeling victorious. As they drive, the silence between them is thick with tension.
Srijita sits stiffly, arms crossed, glaring out the window.
Indra glances at her, trying to suppress his amusement. "You know," he begins, "it's not a big deal. I'm just trying to help."
Srijita shoots him a look. "Help? By blackmailing me with my own ID card? Real helpful."
Indra chuckles, "Well, it worked, didn't it?"She mutters under her breath, "I can't believe I'm stuck with you."
