Freezing
We were a hundred yards from the house when water started pouring from the sky.
I heard Jace curse under his breath and I immediately knew why.
The fat droplets of rain were freezing, slapping against my face, immediately drenching my shirt and jeans. My face stung and numbed all at the same time.
Jace grabbed my hand, urging me faster than my current pace. I tried, stumbling twice over rocks and mud before Jace noticed.
We looked at each other, me squinting water out of my eyes. But seeing the scowl on his face, I almost laughed at the pitiful state we were in.
Releasing my hand, he hauled me by the waist, practically carrying my weight the rest of the way. Our shoes were ruined by the time we got to the front steps.
Jace was already putting the passcode into the door lock. I knelt, removing my shoelaces with cold hands. I stood up, hand against the wall, and started kicking off my shoes.
Wiping his hands against, his wet shirt, Jace attempted the password again, cursing when the door blared but didn't open.
The man in front of me looked like a big, annoyed drowned cat. His hair, shirt and jeans were dripping onto the marble floor, water pooling where he stood. And the scowl he'd been wearing since the rain started, deepened. He was shivering—us both. Very badly.
I pushed him aside and pressed the same numbers he'd been attempting for the last minute.
The door immediately opened.
Not looking at the miserable predator with me, I quickly ran up to the bedroom, and into the en suite bathroom. I went into the frosted glass enclosure—and blankly stared at the complicated shower accessories in front of me.
Looking up, there was a square showerhead plate. And on the sides, full body-mirror sized plates also had shower holes on them.
And looking at the front, aside from the regular pipes and levers, there were various valves, levers, and buttons as well.
I pressed one button, and blue led accent lights lit up on the rims of shower plates overhead and on the walls.
Shaking in the stall, I poked my head out to see Jace followed me into the en suite.
Jace was peeling off his shirt, but he caught me looking, and dropped the hem.
"I'll shower in the other room," he immediately said.
I wasn't thinking about that.
I nodded once, "Okay."
"What?" he asked when I continued to look at him.
"I don't know how to use the shower."
Jace glanced at the glowing frosted glass stall and sighed.
He went over, coming into the shower stall with me, and looked around the same way I did.
Watching him, I asked, "You do know how to operate this, right?"
"No. Mom likes these things. I don't."
"Okay," we paused for a bit. "So, how are we—"
Jace pressed the same button I tried earlier, and the led lights turned off. We glanced at each other.
"Why don't you just try things until something works?" Jace asked, then turned back to the wall.
He twisted two valves. Nothing happened.
