Ruined

It was the day after she received the letter from the doctor.

School had just finished but she didn't feel like going home just yet.

Becky had to prepare for some event happening in a few days so she couldn't come over.

With that, she settled with sitting on a bench by the road next to a run down store.

She wore the coat Damian gave her to cover her uniform and to keep her warm as well.

It was nearing December after all.

She sat there just watching the cars and people passing by.

At some point she started staring at a tree planted on a sidewalk. It was your typical autumn colored tree.

But the leaves were slowly falling, leaving a part of the tree bare.

It wasn't unusual as the transition from autumn to winter started.

But it was unusual to Anya. It was her first time ever acknowledging it. It fascinated her for some reason.

People just pass by and ignore it but she was left curious.

How do the leaves know when to fall? Does it do it intentionally because it knows it's time? Or is the cold weather causing it to fall into nothingness?

She knows that the second answer is right because that's what school taught them.

She can't help but wonder though...

An especially cold breeze blows through, making her shiver.

The coat was nice and warm but it definitely isn't to be used as your only coverage from the cold.

She still hasn't told Handler about her situation. She doesn't want to if she's being honest.

She doesn't want her to get mad. She doesn't wanna get kicked out of WISE. She didn't wanna disappoint her parents.

Especially her father if the mission gets taken from her.

Damian sat in the car, looking out of the window.

He didn't really have to be anywhere right now. He just called the driver assigned to him so he could go for a drive around town.

His room was getting way too suffocating and he needed to get out for a bit.

He wanted to walk around instead of using a car but his father would never allow him.

He says "why walk when you have a vehicle? The paparazzi can't see you walking. Do you know the articles that will start? Walking is for commoners anyway."

He plans on breaking that rule when he feels a little rebellious. He just wasn't in a mood to deal with his father's lectures tomorrow.

They were passing an old run down building when he saw her.

She was on the sidewalk, sitting on a bench wearing his coat.

She seemed out of it. Her eyes were blank. She looked like she was in deep thought. But it also looked like her thoughts were flying away.

Her face was in a deep frown. It's as if she was upset about something.

It might have something to do with what occured the other day.

He so badly wanted to speak to her about it but she strictly told him to never mention it again.

So he didn't.

He tried to help her out in school by picking up her fallen books. She thanked him everytime but it was as if she never even knew it was him who helped her.

Their interactions during the last month have shown him the real Anya Forger. Not the stupid, childish girl he thought she was. But the mature, responsible woman she really is.

It was weird to see her without her goofy smile outside of school but maybe it was what he needed.

It was what he needed for him to finally see her as the person she actually is.

He felt bad for assuming that she was still the same girl who punched him over a decade ago.

But can you blame him? He carried that punch with him forever.

He labeled her as the girl who had no shame and respect.

It was true. A decade ago at least.

She seemed more mature now. But she didn't look happy. She looked sad. Hopeless. Tired.

Sure, Eden was draining for a student.  But it was only a year ago when she started to be like that.

Maybe something changed. Maybe something personal occured that changed her.

He wanted to get to the bottom of it. He wanted to know what was making Anya Forger, the happy go lucky, sad.

But at the same time, he wanted to respect her privacy.

It was conflicting.

But he knew what he was about to do next.

He wanted to get out and talk to her.

"Stop the car." He told his driver.

The vehicle came to an abrupt halt due to the suddenness of his orders.

"You can go. I'll walk back."

The driver nodded and he said a quick thank you before stepping out.

Anya has yet to notice him in her dazed state.

"Forger." He called.

Her head snapped up, eyes instantly locking with his. He never realized how green her eyes were.

"Damian..."

He gave a small smile before moving to sit next to her. She scooted further onto the bench to make some space for him.

He leaned back on the wooden chair and let out a sigh.

"Are you okay? I know you said to never mention what happened the other day but I just wanna make sure you're alright. That must've been a shock."

"I'm fine. Thanks for your concern." She answered flatly.

"Are you really? I don't wanna push you or anything but you don't seem to be fine. I'm willing to listen you know."

Hearing that, her lips started to quiver. Tears pricked her eyes, threatening to fall.

She tried to hold her composure but eventually caved when Damian's hand started to rub her back.

"It ruined me. It- it ruined me..." She said shakily as she cried into his shoulder.

He was honestly shocked. He never saw Anya have a breakdown. He thought she was strong and tough.

Guess he was wrong.

"It ruined me..." She repeated, now holding his sleeve tightly.

His jacket was getting wet with her tears but he didn't mind.

It seemed like she was crying all that she's been holding in. So he just let her do so.

"It's gonna be alright. You'll be fine. You'll be fine..." He mumbled softly as she cried her heart out.
