the russell's had all went together and rented out a farmhouse in the middle of nowhere for an easter break all together. dahlia and jude had went down on the tuesday, spending the day alone just talking and laughing in front of the fire, curled up and watching movies.
then on wednesday, they spent the first half of the day walking around the nearby village in hoodies and caps, trying out the different bakery's and cafes, somehow going unrecognised.
they came home and george and carmen had already arrived. it was just the four of them that night, so they drank while they got to know jude better, dahlia smiling with relief every time they would all laugh.
"jude, can i get a hand bringing in more sticks for the fire?" george asked standing up to go outside. dahlia glared at him but he ignored his little sister.
"uh, yeah sure." jude said, putting his bottle down and following him toward the back door.
"oh god." dahlia cringed once the boys left the room, carmen laughing as the girl dropped her head into her hands.
"don't worry dee." carmen smiled at the girl. "as far as i can tell george seems to like him. jude won't come back terrified...maybe a little scared of your brother though."
dahlia laughed at the girls joke. "what do you think? of jude?"
"does it matter what i think?" carmen said gently, rubbing her finger round the edge of her wine glass.
"yes." dahlia smiled at the girl. "you know i think of you as family carmen."
the older girl blushed, "well then, i think he's a very nice boy who is totally into you."
"you think?" dahlia raised her eyebrows.
"yes." carmen smiled honestly, nodding. dahlia was force to look away, hardly being able to contain herself. "it's good to see you smiling like this again."
"it feels good to be smiling like this again." dahlia said back. it was true. she felt like a giddy girl falling again. and after being heartbroken for months, she was feeling herself again.
"they're back!" carmen cheered as the two boys came back inside. dahlia felt herself relax as she saw jude's smile. they dropped their logs next to the fire, george throwing a couple onto the flames before sitting back down next to carmen, kissing her forehead while putting his arm around her shoulders.
"everything okay?" dahlia asked jude as he sat back down beside her. he smiled and nodded.
"good." she smiled back, wrapping her arms around his and curled up next to him.
