The next morning greets you with a blaring headache, the memories of the previous night's fun lingering like a heavy fog in your mind. You groan softly as you glance at the alarm clock showing you that it's only 6 am. With a sigh, you swing your legs over the edge of the bed, the cool floor causing goosebumps to spread along your body.
You gather your scattered clothes, wincing at the jolt of pain that shoots through your temples. Just as you're about to slip out the door, Kita begins to move, his gaze meeting yours with a mix of concern and tiredness. "Hey, are you leaving already?" he asks. "Do you want something to eat first?"
You offer him a small smile, the warmth of his consideration spreading through you. "It's okay," you shake your head, "I've got to get to my new job."
"New job? I thought you were a dancer," he replies, furrowing his brows.
"I am, but I'm also a waitress now," you tell him.
"How is that working out so far? Any problems?"
"Well, I'm going to have to ask my old boss if I can cut down my hours. It's not that I don't like working there but it's starting to become a bit dangerous, especially with that one asshole," you scoff.
"Please, at least let me drive you back home," he says, throwing the covers off himself and grabbing his pants.
"It's fine," you try to reason with him. "Besides, don't you have to go to work?"
"I have the day off," he answers with a shrug.
So, despite your attempts to dissuade him, he quickly gets dressed and walks you outside. The cool morning air cuts through the haze of your headache
"Are you sure you don't want to stay for a bit? Maybe have some breakfast or coffee?" he asks, his eyes boring into yours.
"Yeah, I'm sure," you nod. "I will pretty much just have enough time to take a shower, get changed, and grab a bite to eat before I have to leave," you explain, knowing that he'll probably still worry.
"Okay," he sighs.
"Don't worry about me," you smile. "I'll be alright."
As you guide him to your apartment, you can't help but notice the way he glances at your old bruises, a look of concern and pity etched on his features. When you reach your front door, Kita gently tugs on your wrist and turns you to face him.
"Y/N," he whispers, his gaze holding yours.
"Yes?" you reply.
"I know you probably don't want to talk about this, but can I just say one thing?"
"Go ahead."
Kita reaches into his pocket and pulls out a slip of paper. You watch carefully as he jots down his number before handing it to you. "Here," he says, his voice soft. "Text me or call me if you ever need anything or want to hang out again. My number's changed since high school so if you want to reach out, use this."
You stare at the scrap of paper, surprised by his gesture. "Thanks," you say, a grin tugging at the corners of your lips.
"Anytime," he replies, returning the smile.
After saying goodbye, you walk back into the solitude of your apartment, the quiet surroundings offering you a quick break from the whirlwind of emotions that swirl within you. With a sigh, you make your way to the shower, allowing the warm water to wash away the lingering memories of the previous night and thoughts of Kita.
As you dry off, you glance down at the note that Kita had given you, his phone number staring back at you. The temptation to call him or send him a text message is almost overwhelming, but you decide against it. There's no sense in getting too close, especially not with everything that's happened between the two of you.
With a sigh, you force yourself to push aside any other doubts and focus on the present. Then, once you're ready, you step outside and begin your walk to work.
You arrive a few minutes early and find your new boss waiting for you. She shows you around the small restaurant and explains what you'll be doing. "We'll start off slow and I'll have you take orders and make a few drinks. It's nothing too difficult. Do you have any questions?" she asks, her eyes searching yours.
"I don't think so," you shake your head.
"Alright," she smiles, "you'll do fine."
She sticks with you for the first hour as you start your shift. It takes you a little while to get used to the different drink orders, but after a while, things seem to flow pretty smoothly. You can't help but smile, realizing that maybe everything is going to turn out alright after all.
After two hours, another woman walks into the store. Your boss introduces you to her and then the two of you take over together. "Mel will be your new mentor," your boss informs you.
"Great," you smile.
"She'll train you and then I'll stop by at the end of your shift to see how you're doing," she says. "Good luck."
As Mel begins to give you the rundown now that she is here, the two of you fall into an easy rhythm, working together. It doesn't take long before you feel comfortable and at ease, and the afternoon flies by. By the time your shift ends, the two of you are laughing and joking as though you've been friends for years.
"See you tomorrow," Mel grins, giving you a hug.
"See ya," you say, returning the smile.
As you make your way home, you can't help but think that maybe you've found a place where you can finally be happy. You have a good job and people who care about you. Maybe this is what it's supposed to be like.
You reach into your bag and pull out the note with Kita's phone number, running your fingers along the edges.
You wonder if it'd be worth it to try to rekindle the friendship, or if it'd be better to let the past stay in the past. Then, after a moment of deliberation, you decide to put the note back and continue on your way before you get too distracted.
You know there's a chance that the two of you might never speak again, but for now, you're content to keep your friendship exactly where it is: in the past.
And yet, for some reason, you can't seem to forget about the way his touch lingered on your skin or the softness of his gaze. With a sigh, you push the thoughts away and continue walking. You can worry about Kita another time. For now, all you need is a good night's sleep.
And that's exactly what you plan to do.
