Before you leave work that night, you cover your new bruise with makeup and change your clothes.
As soon as you step outside the club, you walk across the street to the new coffee shop that had just opened up about a month ago but you hadn't had the opportunity to visit yet.
Inside, the cafe is cozy, with a warm orange glow coming from the lights. It's quiet, and there is nobody sitting at the tables. Well, it is past midnight. The only reason why the place is open is because it's aware of its location in the city. But it's quite comforting nonetheless. The air smells like freshly brewed coffee, and the music is soft.
"Hi, can I have a caramel latte, please?" you ask the barista behind the counter, "Oh, and an everything bagel, too."
"Of course," she replies with a smile.
You wait patiently while the barista makes your order. Typically, you head straight home. But tonight you feel more comfortable staying out longer, surrounded by other people. Because of incidents like tonight, you don't always feel safe going home alone after work.
When she's done, the barista places your drink and food on the counter.
"Thanks," you say, taking the cup and plate.
"No problem, have a good night."
You turn around, and take a seat at one of the tables in the corner. You take a bite of the bagel and sip on the coffee. It's surprisingly delicious. But just as you are enjoying your meal, you hear a man's voice call out to you.
"Excuse me, I was sitting there."
You glance up, and are shocked to find your old friend Kita standing before you. Immediately, you recognize him and stand up to greet him in the. most awkward way possible. "Shinsuke..."
"Y/N," he replies, definitely surprised to see you.
"I- uh- I'm sorry, I'll move-"
"No, no," he interrupts, shaking his head. "I didn't realize it was you. Sit. Please."
You nod, and take your seat again. "I can't believe it's you, Shinsuke," you say, unable to hold back a small smile.
"It's been a while," he says, his expression softening.
"Yeah, about seven years," you say, trying to think back to the last time the two of you had spoken.
"So much has changed," he says, running his hand through his short hair.
"Yeah, it has," you say, smiling. "You look great."
"Same to you," he smiles. "Are you still with your boyfriend?"
Your face heats up at his question and quickly, you put your hand on your cheek to cover your new bruise from that nigth. He was always good at spotting them despite your makeup. "Well... not anymore, actually. We broke up after high school. I haven't heard from him since."
Kita raises his eyebrows, and then nods. "That's good to hear. You deserve better."
You look away from him, unsure of what to say. "Thank you," you reply, awkwardly.
He stares at you for a moment, his gaze intense.
You shift uncomfortably under his gaze. "So, um, what've you been up to?" you ask him. "I don't think we've talked since graduation."
"I work in finance," he explains. "And you?"
"I'm in entertainment," you smile, avoiding answering his question. You didn't know if he knew what you did for a living, but you didn't want to be the first to bring that up. "How is that going for you?"
