Amity sat in front of her mirror, trying hard to fix her hair and tugging at her collar. The cardigan and leggings Lilith had bought her was really itchy and felt extremely uncomfortable but she couldn't work up the courage to tell her that. It would make her seem ungrateful. Lilith had bought her the outfit just for this family dinner and she didn't want to waste it by not wearing it.
"Amity! They're here!" She heard Lilith announce to her from downstairs. She got up after taking one final glance and went to greet Eda and Raine.
"Hey, kid," Eda waved to her once she saw her.
"Uh, h-hi Eda," she answered back. Amity stood there awkwardly as the adults talked in the doorway. She wanted to start fidgeting with her fingers but knew it was probably disrespectful.
"I have dinner almost ready, why don't you all wait in the living room?" Lilith offered, leading them there. Amity sat down stiffly on one of the couches.
"So, you Lily's kid?" Eda asked.
"Well, not biologically, I guess. I'm her apprentice," Amity responded.
"Apprenticeships are great at getting ahead. I bet you'll be a coven head someday with how early you're starting," Raine chimed in.
"Th-thanks Mx. Whispers," Amity said. Eda and Raine asked her a couple questions to make small talk until dinner would be ready.
Lilith called for Amity to come help set the table when she was about done with the cooking. Raine tried to help her but she didn't want the guest to be doing any chores while they were here.
Everyone sat down at the table once Amity was finished and Lilith soon brought out the food and set it on the table.
The food looked amazing but when Amity tried it, the texture made her want to barf. But no one else seemed to be having a problem with it. Eda was scarfing it down while drinking her apple blood and Raine seemed to be fine with it too. Amity didn't want to waste the food she had on her plate and forced herself to eat it.
she felt as if everything was happening too fast and too much. She was uncomfortable and frustrated. She wanted to rip her cardigan off or spit out her food but she didn't, because then that would embarrass Lilith.
Things started to get worse once conversations started up. The sounds of silverware clinking, mixed with chewing, and loud talking, were too much for her. Her heart beated ferociously in her chest, and her brain felt fuzzy.
Her breaking point happened when Eda was telling a story. Amity didn't want to be rude, but she just wasn't using her inside voice. Then, she yelled her big joke and everyone started laughing. They didn't realize that Amity was covering her ears as tears leaked out from her eyes. She pushed back her chair and ran out the room, trying to find a place to hide.
Eventually, she came across a closet that had jackets and coats in them. Luckily, the clothing hangers that were holding up the coats were pretty high because she managed to curl up on the floor without having the jackets in her face or touching her.
Now that she was alone she could let out all of these pent up emotions. She pulled hard on her hair and began kicking the closed door. She made strangled screaming, crying noises. She ripped the cardigan, but sadly, couldn't do that with her itchy leggings.
All of the frustration and uncomfortable emotions were let out in that closet.
…
As Lilith laughed at the funny joke, she heard a chair move. She quickly opened her eyes and saw Amity was covering her ears and running.
