2:10 PM"Hey Thomas I got your text. You wanted to see me?"
"Jamila! My pride and joy, come on in. We've got a lot to catch up on."
Laughing at his remark, I walked inside his office and sat down in front of his desk ready to go to work.
"I was only gone for a few days, how much could I have possibly missed?"
"You'd be surprised how quick things move around here," he chuckled.
"Ooo do tell."
"Well for starters, Steve from IT volunteered to cater lunch on Wednesday."
"Oh my gosh can he do that?"
"Second and third floor put it to a vote but he wasn't taking no for an answer. So if I were you, I'd order takeout for lunch."
I chuckled, "Noted."
"Also, we just got assigned a new case and it's not pretty."
"I'm up for the challenge."
"That's what I like to hear," Thomas leaned over his desk and handed me a folder containing various files and documents.
After thumbing through a few of them, I looked up and saw him looking at me with a prideful expression.
"Sorry. Did you want to look over these together?"
"No, no, it's not that. I haven't gotten the chance to properly congratulate you on your promotion to full-time paralegal. It's exciting, no?"
"Yeah. I mean I love my job here so this was nothing short of thrilling for me. I like working on cases and stuff. It's not my initial plans for the future but it's growing on me."
"What were your initial plans?"
"Thomas we should really start looking over these files for the case."
"The files can wait. We're always discussing work or cases. I barely know anything about your goals. You're a quiet woman but what does Jamila want?"
I fiddled with my fingers as I searched my mind for answers. I wanted so much for myself, especially my career.
Music was something I was passionate about but suddenly lost sight of after I left for college. Dakota stuck with his love for it but I've somehow drifted away.
I admire the music business but something was drawing me closer to this place and I didn't know what it was.
"I wanted to be a song writer. Writing has always been something I was passionate about and it was my dream to be this big time writer and artist."
"Was?" He asked, leaning forward. "What's changed since then?"
".....I don't know. Working here with you and the other associates and workers has been exhilarating. I'm not sure I want to give that up just yet."
"So what's next for you? You're going to stay a paralegal your whole career?"
"I don't think so. Mr. Ausage offered me a full-time position here as a paralegal and the chance to attend law school."
"Law school? That's amazing Jamila! You'll be awesome there."
"Will I? I mean I'm just learning a few things about law and I'm not sure I'm really cut out to do this the rest of my life-"
