2:58 AM

"Mama please stop pacing. You're making my nerves bad."

"Your nerves bad? Mines are shocked. I can't sit down and I don't want to."

"Mom-"

"Jamila I'm stressed right now baby. Alright? Your brother is in there with Adriana, Valentina's disappeared somewhere in the building, the twins are nowhere to be found, and Maya is missing. I am.....scared."

"I'm scared too. I am, but I need you to sit down for just a minute."

"Jamila-"

"Mom." I stated. "Please, come sit down. Pacing isn't going to speed up their surgeries. We can't do anything but wait."

My mom sighed, reluctantly coming to sit down between me and Ryan. I noticed her leg was shaking so I interlocked our hands, rubbing the back of hers trying to calm her nerves.

"This was supposed to be a peaceful trip for us," she sniffed.

"I know."

"How could this happen? What could've possibly made someone want to harm us?"

I sighed, trying to figure out the answers myself. I've been asking that question since the incident happened. Right now, I have no answers.

"I'm not sure mom. But whatever happens, just know it'll be okay."

"You say that so confidently."

"That's because I'm trying to force myself to believe it. Our family is fighting for their lives back there. I can't think about anything else but positives to keep me going. You should too."

".....I'm trying. I really am. I just.....can't imagine what Valentina and Dakota are going through right now. I almost lost my mind when your brother had that car accident.....I can only pray for the best outcome."

Ryan's muffled cries could be heard as she laid her head on my mom's shoulder. Her tears haven't stopped since the shooting happened.

After we talked to a few police officers and gave our statements, they gave us an emergency escort to the hospital.

Ryan couldn't stop crying long enough to tell the officer what she knew or if she'd seen anything. I felt so bad for her because I know Adriana is like the only real family she has.

And me? I wasn't lying when I said I'm trying to tell myself that this will be okay because I can't bare to imagine what will happen if it isn't.

Dakota never left Adri's side when they wheeled her in. Her condition was a little scarier since she was unconscious before the ambulance arrived at the hospital.

She'd lost so much that it left a trail of blood on the hospital floor when they brought her in through the lobby. Ryan was uncontrollably crying by then.

"Look I don't know about y'all, but I can't worry on an empty stomach."

I gave Nia a small smile as she stood up, stretching her body before grabbing her phone from the seat.

"If you're going to grab some grub I'll come with you."

"The more the merrier. Let's go."

I rubbed my mother's hand once more before I got up and followed Nia out of the vacant waiting room.

We walked silently and approached a small area housing a few vending machines.

"Options. I love it."
