Varys' POV
Oh, the Fortitudos and the Starks. What a mess they have made of things. Wanted by Cersei Lannister of all people!
Of course, I promised her that I would keep Marienne safe. And unlike Littlefinger, I keep my word, for the better of the realm.
I watch from the balcony of the building, as Eddard Stark is executed across the Square. If only he had not told Cersei what he knew.
Because he did so, Cersei had enough time to plot to kill the King with the wine and the boar, and make sure that her vile son Joffrey is placed on the throne.
This is why you must always act fast in Kings Landing, and never reveal your cards to the enemy.
Eddard Stark was a good man. His intentions were moral. But that alone cannot help a man survive.
Lord Oran Fortitudo. I watch as he also meets his fate. The crowd screams louder. I wince as the blood splatters against Marienne, and the crowd members that are close to the front. His disembodied head is held up by Ilyn Payne, the man who executed them.
Marienne's face seems calm, yet full of fear. She should have more trust in me.
"Should we begin?" Thomas the stonemason asks me, standing beside me, as he too looks down at the crowd.
I nod, placing my hands on the railings of the balcony, watching the scene intently.
"Very well. I will signal the others." Thomas says, and walks away from me.
"Come on.." I urge, waiting for the scene to unfold.
Three men, towards the back of the crowd, begin to throw rocks into the mass. Another bunch of men close to the front begin to throw rocks also, and soon the crowd is no longer paying attention to the front, but are brawling in the square, accusing each other of throwing rocks at them.
"Stop! Stop I say! I am the King now do as I command!" Joffrey screams from the front, stamping his foot on the ground as he tries to get the brawling crowds attention.
The noise is deafening, as the crowd continues to fight each other. My fingers whiten as my grip is tight on the bar, watching Marienne as she looks around confused, like a lost child.
I spot the flame rising on the wooden platform, as smoke begins to fill the air around Marienne.
Thomas had used a torch to set it alight, giving my spies enough time to get Marienne off the stage without anyone realising, the smoke covering the tracks.
"That's it.." I say again, smirking as my plan is pulled off much better than I had hoped it would.
Joffrey runs off of the stage as the smoke grows bigger, and soon the stage is vacated as the flames catch hold of it.
They will now believe that Marienne succumbed to the flames, giving her an easy exit out of Kings Landing, as no one will be searching for her.
I watch as a dark cape is wrapped around her, concealing her identity, and Thomas helps her run into the alleyway.
"I will be seeing you very soon, Marienne Fortitudo." I smirk, as I look down at the chaos I have helped cause, and walk back into the building.
